Bees Attack 95-Year-Old Man

An elderly man taking a walk is stung more than 400 times, possibly by Africanized honey bees, authorities say.

An elderly man was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after he was stung more than 400 times by a swarm of bees that may have been Africanized honey bees, the told City News Service.

Police spokesman Sgt. Phil Keenan said the bees became angry when someone attempted to fumigate a hive in the attic of a two-story apartment building at the corner of Ruxton and Rockefeller lane. A fumigator had tried to eliminate the bees before.

The 95-year-old man was taking a walk when the bees attacked him, Keenan said.

"[The bees] went into his ears, the palms of his hands, his arms, his face, his neck—everything that was exposed," Keenan said.

The bees also attacked the that rushed to the scene and brushed the bees off the victim, but the firefighters "had the right gear on," Keenan said.

The man was not allergic to bees, though he will remain in the hospital overnight for observation.
