Hospitalized Cyclist Dies From Injuries

Los Angeles resident Larry Schellhase, 68, succumbs to injuries sustained Thursday in a fall off his bike on Catalina Avenue in South Redondo Beach.

The Los Angeles cyclist who sustained serious injuries when he came off his bicycle in the 100 block of South Catalina Avenue on Thursday has died, Sgt. Shawn Freeman of the confirmed Tuesday.

Larry Schellhase, 68, died from injuries to his head and neck sustained in the fall, Freeman said.

According to bicycling blog BikingInLA, Schellhase was riding his bicycle with his wife and some friends when he hit some metal debris in the roadway and flew over the handlebars, landing face-first.

Paramedics treated him at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital.

Freeman said the Police Department is still investigating the cause of the fall and could not confirm whether metal debris was involved.

"We know (Schellhase) came off his bicycle," Freeman said. "We believe he came forward off his bicycle"; however, he noted that the investigation was not complete.

According to BikingInLA, Schellhase was a longtime member of the Los Angeles Wheelmen, a social bicycling club in Los Angeles.
