Letter: Attend Anti-Power Plant Rally
Christine Wike of Hermosa Beach encourages people to attend an anti-power plant rally and fight AES' plans to build a new plant.
We need your support! Now is the time to show our opposition to another 50 years of re-industrialization on our waterfront. 2012 will be the defining year for the future of AES Redondo, and the South Bay's support or opposition to their plans to rebuild a new power plant here will be the determining factor. AES will file their application with the California Energy Commission to license a new power plant in Redondo and will also bid for a long-term contract with the California Public Utilities Commission and Southern California Edison to provide power to California. All in 2012!
Please join us at the No Power Plant Rally on Sat., Jan. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Herondo to oppose plans for a new polluting power plant in Redondo Beach. We’ll have signs available, and there is free parking on Herondo/190th. A new power plant is incompatible with our densely populated waterfront, marring the community and exposing us to a substantial increase in pollution. This plant is also unnecessary, according to the agency that maintains the reliability of the electrical grid in California.
Please spread the word and make sure to sign the No New Power Plant petition at nopowerplant.com.
Sincerely,
Christine Wike

Don't want a power plant then turn off your lights and go to bed at dusk. Sell your car and walk or ride your bike. Start by reducing the density in Hermosa Beach too that is if you want to save the planet. All that hot air and CO2 coming from you blustering is damaging the environment. Do you really think angry people swinging signs around improves out waterfront. Please when you come don't disrupt traffic impede pedestrians who want to be in Redondo. So stay over on the Hermosa corner as well. Wait there isn't enough room there becasue the Citizens of Hermosa have over developed and over built all of the property up to the water line. A nice park on teh north side of 190th would be awesome. With an ocean view too please! The reduction in cars and traffic would enormously improve our lives here in Redondo Beach. If you could get a bridge for pedestrians and bikes to go across PCH at 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th street would be nice as well so we can get to your nice greenbelt for us to walk our Dogs at.

There are plenty of Redondo residents who want to see the power plant gone, not sure why you are taking the "attack Hermosa" approach here. Hermosa is just as impacted by the power plant as Redondo. And, public protest goes back to the founding of America. Our constitution is built around these roots and ensures our right to free speech. It seems you lack a viable argument for keeping the power plant so you resort to personal attacks and insults instead.
The power plant is no longer required. Multiple state agency projections have shown we do not need AES Redondo for grid reliability. It is our biggest single source of air pollution and it will pollute more if the new plant runs at the rates projected by AES. Redondo Beach City reports show it negatively impacts city and business revenues and it negatively impacts business and residential property values. It's a no brainer - negative impacts, power not needed - time for the plant to go!

Right after the rally, we can go to the party thrown by the developer who ends up building the condos that will replace the power plant. Whoever he is, I'd appreciate an invitation. I'm afraid he'll do his backroom deals and I won't get to join the celebration.

Tom - have you never read the City Charter, did you miss the Measure DD vote, or are you just fear mongering? Since measure DD passed in 2008, our City Charter requires a vote of the people to add condos to the power plant site.

You may be right, Jim. I just don't trust politicians and lawyers (who, presumably, wrote the City Charter and measure DD). I'm also a believer in Murphy's Law. If it really would take a vote of the people, I could imagine some Donald Trump-type saturating the media with ads telling the 90% of Redondo residents who don't live right next to the power plant, that a giant condo complex (such as SeaScape) would solve the city's budget problems and benefit them, personally, more than a park that draws users from LA's inner city.

Tom - measure DD was drafted by residents. The City has tried to use a loop hole to avoid it already... so some mistrust is healthy. And I agree that a developer could flood the residents with slick marketing. But I think enough of us are weary enough that we would never buy into the type of overdevelopment that would be pushed by those type of developers.
We have drafted zoning that is 30% low density commercial/institutional development and 70% park. We have the State Coastal Conservancy ready to help get funding for the public land side. They already funded a visioning study and presented the results in Redondo. All we need is either the City Council to get onboard or, our Plan B.... we are working to get an initiative on the ballot should the city continue to stall.

Jim, thank you for all your great work on this. Too many of us residents are tired of the greedy developers and the "do nothing" councilmembers (with the exception of Bill Brand). We want integrity and we want to do the RIGHT THING for our community! This country is witnessing a huge uproar of frustration in government and corruption. And it will take RESIDENTS to get active and send our message loud and clear.
The South Bay has so many educated and bright residents with great connections and influence. If we work together, we CAN accomplish great things and getting rid of the dangerous, polluting power plant on our waterfront could be the biggest WIN our community has had in years! We need THOUSANDS of signatures on the petition showing opposition to the AES rebuild!! We have approx 2200 now. Please choose to do something GREAT for your community and sign this petition and join the fight! Every voice counts!
