Letter: Mail Carriers Overworked

Vicky Oetzell says that an apparent reduction in the number of delivery areas in the city is forcing mail carriers to work late.

If you live in Redondo Beach, have you noticed over the past two-and-a-half weeks that your mail delivery might be arriving at midnight, 10 p.m. or 8 p.m.—or not at all? We have.

I found out that Redondo Beach, until 2 1/2 weeks ago, had 50 delivery areas. Now there are 35 areas. Because the postal service has reduced the number of areas,  mail carriers are forced to work until 10 p.m. or midnight. We have gone without mail a couple of times.

These poor mail carriers are working 12-14 hours a day to get the job done, and sometimes they aren't. This means they are walking many hours a day. These postal workers have to go in and separate the mail for their area, which is taking longer because they have a bigger area, and then go out to deliver, which of course is taking longer. We saw one male postal carrier with a lantern on his hat, delivering mail on the next block at 10:30 p.m. last week.

This is insane and has to stop. Today, the newspaper reported the financial problems the USPS is having and I understand these issues are grave. I just hope they don't put their workers into graves.

yeah, that is why the post office is going broke just like every other governmemt run entity including law enforcement. Some of these people make well over $100,000 a year and guess who pays for it.

My mail sometimes comes at 10 pm. The carrier said his route keeps changing and he is working 10 - 12 days. This is abusive. Either raise the postal rates, or better yet, reduce mail delivery to fewer days per week.

There is only one fix for this sky is falling scam implemented by management. A nationwide lock-out of every inbred weasel manager that slithers to work every day to pretend that they actually do or micro-manage anything. The 6 most senior WORKERS would rotate daily operations at plants and stations Monday to Saturday. Every postal worker needs to put the spotlight on our real enemy which is postal management. Here is a simple math problem. "If you lined up the 6 foot desks of the 110,000 management slots in a line. How long would it be?" Answer: 125 miles. I say send those desk jockeys to line the California/ Mexico border and deduct their worthless salaries from the PO and drop a dime off of a stamp. One, it won't affect the mail stream at all and 2 management is only good at taking workers jobs away. So line them all up on our southern borders to keep the illegals from taking away American jobs. 2 birds 1 stone.

Research this as your proof. The manager that set off the carrier in the Oklahoma shooting massacre was promoted, transferred to California and even purchased his house with postal revenue. Later in his career he himself shot another manager over a promotion. The plant manager that sent the clerks to their deaths in the anthrax attack was recently promoted to 1 of the 47 high level VP positions under Donahoe. FIRE ALL POSITIONS THAT DON"T WORK THE MAIL! Let the crafts manage themselves. Make management increase the postal revenue and increase customer service for their salaries. It's the only fix to save our postal service. MAKE MANAGEMENT WORK NOT BULLY FOR BONUSES!

Get rid of the inbred idiot managers and I will work till I am 8o and it would be a good place to work. This is why management ranks are increasing so they force out the union workers and eliminate customer service. Then the corporations can privatize our last freedoms of information. And without a postal service to everywhere these traitors in the house and senate can't be voted out by absentee ballot. FIRE POSTAL MANAGEMENT AND VOTE EM OUT IN 2012!!!

We don't need mail 6 days a week. The post office could reduce mail service to 4 days a week and mostlikely turn the Government run operation into a profitable operation rather than billion,s of dollars in loses every year.

Who is WE,Ray?? Am I a WE? How about the millions of senior citizens that under a 5 day delivery plan, will already have to wait for no cost to them(delivery refills) Whats another day,I guess.Fed-ex and UPS can do it. Only it won,t be free then. They are already 3x's higher than USPS on shipping and services that they are even able to handle. Say good-bye to Net-flix. Say good-bye to the thousands of other businesses and its employees that rely on USPS low cost shipping and services. Your plan shuts down a One Trillion dollar economy, and thats a fact! The millions that will lose their jobs because of your plan can just get other jobs. I hear there are plenty of them out there!! But seriously,I do wonder how safe our neighborhoods will be then? A lot more at stake and to be considered before we launch forward with a plan that is just good for you,as I am sure you are one of the very few of the WE.......

Billion dollar loss is a smoke screen to cover up the fact that the general fund already spent the csrs retirement.. So they have to destroy the post office or explain where the money went. If you have carriers working till 10:30 at night this is proof that they are under staffed. Except in management that got us in the red. Now the idiots want get rid of 220,000 more. It's time for an independant audit. Start the schreders management

chicken little the sky is falling, my spouse as letter carrier had non replacement of retires in office in 06, the same year the postal accountibility (not) and enhacement ( subtraction ) act was passed as law, for that information how it relates to most post office go to awpu first area local 3800, in there go to the library and read the artical by j golberg under ongoing violations, there are also articals by dr stephen muscarro, for free read. for postal politics and the frutiless endevor go to minot daily news archives ( you have to join to read) postal politics to get a wider scope of what is going on within the usps. For more information on daily updates you can go to www.savethepostoffice.com ( the alternate is the one full of lies save the post service which is funded by issa and taxdollars) , the only way is to be highly poltical, and remove the senator issa , ross duo, but that may take some doing. for more on this go to a little history lesson for representative ross to see the resulting factors for all things postal. Most of the American public is not aware, however if you go to the ed show on you can see the truth there as well, plus there is ongoing within the oversight commitee of stopping the hr bill 1351, in its tracks even though with backing by 229 bipartisan effort. My spouse passed in 07 after enduring( semper fi) more probably will with the curant non stoppage of bleeding the usps dry. This is called understaffed but not maximinization, or overburdened.

Here is proof management is INSANE! Here in Seattle the routes downtown are all foot routes. Just last week management began converting high-rise buildings downtown into a park and loop route. So converting walking routes and using 44 more postal trucks is a money saving idea. These routes went from 8 hour routes to 12 hour routes overnight. To top it off there is zero parking downtown. So management orders us to park illegally and bring the tickets back for him to pay. This will eat up his $5000 bonus in about a month. We have news for him that 2 carriers that were forced into retirement now work for the city in parking enforcement.

Get this. The station manager was given his job at international station in Seattle Washington by his parents who both where high level EAS managers in Denver. This was his 1st job in the post office. Normally you have 20 years or more before you make it to this level. The father retired and the mother gave him a subcontracted outsourced job for the USPS. While getting a postal pension he is a civilian contractor doing mystery shopper surveys for his son’s station. You don't have to guess who got the most bonuses in Seattle. To top it off, a clerk complained to management and tried to file a grievance. Weeks later she showed up as a 204b in management training at a different station in Seattle. A month later she transferred to California and is most likely finding jobs for her relatives there by now. This is what we are faced with every day.

Now let’s do the math. Say the average pay for the 110,000 managers nationwide is $65,000. This is $7150000000. 7 BILLION 150 Million DOLLORS a year. Donabloe says we are losing 8 billion and have to lay off 220,000 workers. The OIG and postal inspectors work for management and target mainly the workers. They are fully aware this is going on but do nothing. $65,000 is a low average not including the bonuses and perk they give themselves. This figure could easily be beyond 15 billion. FIRE THEM ALL OR AT LEAST SOMEONE INVESTIGATE IT, PLEASE!!! We just want to work and make it to retirement.

spin was put out by media owned , that average worker was at 89 thousand with benifits,( all lies spin) and benifts are bad,(for rest of private as well, they want to give no benifits, no retirement and this starts with usps and then goes, its the party agenda) ross states gravy train retirement must end, but meanwhile potter retired with 5.5 million former pmg, thats for life, the gravy train is at the top. The OiG and GAC want to keep their jobs in political quagmire, donahue is on the train also with paea that is part of the deal. Ross and Issa control the oversite com. and stopped 1351 whcih 229 bipartisan signed for, they stopped the vote, and want vote on the bill pushed thru per agenda. Spouse worked 17 years, no retirement, death and based in that bill in non replacement of 3 to one, on my spouse postal end , he got none, without collective bargaining, which they want to do away with , all union capice? They upped it to one , to make it sane they think. And yes they plan to get rid of more , so they can keep the prefunded amount.

Reply

Val Nostdahl

so lets start with paea, which was predated by a little history lesson for ross, in which, usps told congress it overpaid retirement civil service retirement by 70 billion and federal employee retirement by 7 billion, in 03, passing a law to make it legal then came to usps via voice vote the paea in 06,( by the way potter went to work for the person who brought it all up since he is in charge of airports in dc for another retirement on gravy train) making them pay in to a 3rd retirement fund ( where the other 2 had come out of checks of taxpaying workers) and not give back but take the same amount, =20 billion now paid in, so if you first cut down from attrition ( retirement) by non replacments you get math of downsizing 730,000 workers across the natiion ( aprox) to 530,000, then if you prefund, and cut another 220,000 = 330,000 workers to do the work of former workers at same time do more math, if you cut the locations of postal office, they dont have to work in those areas, and can take the taxpaid for buildings and sell them and get the money as well, its an insane plan of hurting the middle class workers for life, and pretty much against that little piece of paper constituted that is sworn to be upheld by senator issa and representative ross, but hecks it only paper and play money anyway , and soft assets dont matter like craft union workers at all.

maybe the only way is to fight fire with fire, so lets see the usps is currently the 2nd biggest at this point employer in the USA, and currently 8th worldwide, which may change with the loss that is predicted to happen by actions over tweedum and tweedee, so lets see if the other players in the USA , besides the number one, are interested in slowing down in the us mail, say like disney, and others, with this going on, then you might get some action on the hill by pinnochio gang, also case in point, none of the players have ever actually worked at delivering the us mail, in cluding the main proponent sent to ivestigage other countries, isnt that just de=villishus, ..currently talking to congress, herr philip.

so here is math formula worker A at bottom starts out doing mail and works up the ladder and must fight for promotion not be automatically promoted thru collective bargaining, gets to finally get full route and earn up to basic pay begining around 34 thousand and ending probably around 55 thousand with micromangament, death and no retirement,
worker b starts at the top of connection heap and gets to work for age limit of first employee to age 55, and get 5,5 million for lifetime , in fact at end of career is paid more then vice president of USA,
worker A had to put up with all kind of weather condititions , sort and deliver mail and then get non replacement of people retirement, deal with no help, understaffed and not overburdened according to politically correct words, of retaliation of union activities all the while trusting he has made a career choice in working for the usps hoping for golden gravy train of maybe downsizing from 55 thousand to half from social security and half from retirement= 36,000 a year on retirement, but instead dies.
worker b , played ball with big boys, and moved on to jets, meanwhile more destruction is left behind in work force, where most are now unaware of how this really works, in reality disney fantasyland by proponet pupperteer ross and pinochio aide, and it become apparent that twedledum and tweedee will get what they want since they rule the house on the hill instead of we the people.
55 thousand compared to 5,5 million is peanuts.

I am a letter carrier in WI and its not much better here with the long hours and ridiculously planned routes. We have had 11 routes cut from one office alone in the past 4 years. We get yelled at every morning telling us what slugs we are for not meeting their standards on the routes. We are bullied, harrassed, physically and mentally assaulted daily and then we get followed by management to justify their jobs. I agree, get rid of the management that they have that isn't qualified to clean my toilet and allow the crafts to manage on a rotating schedule and then we'll talk about how to run the po. As for ending saturday delivery? Are you nuts? My mondays are long enough thank you and I get no assistance to keep me from going into overtime well into the dark. I have a hat with a light and wish more people would keep their porch lights on for us. I would rather spend the time with my family than work overtime. I can't spend the money if I'm dead anyway so staff us properly so we too can enjoy what management has beyond the job - our families!!!

It's difficult to have any empathy for letter carriers when the quality of their work here in 90277 is so substandard. My mailbox location has been in the same place on the side of my house since 1948 but letter carriers routinely just drop my mail on the ground on my front porch. When you call it to their attention they do nothing to correct their mistakes. Apparently what USPS employees do best is cry and whine about their job problems, but in my opinion based on the quality of their work they are choosing to punish themselves.

I have been fortunate to have the greatest , most efficient letter carriers for the past 32 + years. It is most disappointing to hear/read the POST OFFICE has made these changes and the individuals that pay for it emotionally and physically are the carriers. My opinion is any and every employer should take care of their employees, doing so makes them better workers and healthier. I would encourage them (POST OFFICE) to make the necessary changes so we as the customer begin getting our mail before 5p.m., not 10 p.m. and the letter carriers are working normal weekly hours!!! Since the creation of the fax machine and now the internet the mail has been less and less NOT more and more.......
