Letter: Power Plant Emissions Unhealthy
Emissions from AES Redondo Beach are harmful to the health of the community, says resident Dan Buck.
We all know the AES power plant in Redondo hurts our views and property values, but what about our health?
While scientists and researchers continue to learn more about the harmful effects of power plant emissions, AES continues to move forward with plans to remodel their plant which will create even more toxic pollutants on a daily basis.
Sure, shorter smoke stacks might improve aesthetics, but they will also decrease dispersion and increase the density of particulates spread over the local residents of Hermosa and Redondo.
By how far and how much ... our elected officials don't want to answer those questions.
Much like Beach Cities Health District, our local school boards and PTAs, local health clubs and employers all seem perfectly happy with the status quo.
If you care about your health, or that of your parents or children who are most at risk, get more information at www.NoPowerPlant.com.
Then contact your mayor and local councilmen and ask them what they plan to do to protect your health and your investment in beach property.
Apathy won't cure asthma, cancer, heart or lung disease, but your action can help prevent it.

I really think you need to focus your attention to the thousands of cars and trucks traveling through Redondo Beach and Hermosa as that is the major polluters in the south bay. You still speak of views you loose you should not have move here if you think you veiw is impacked by the plant. Come on get real. its not about Pollution its about your View. I suggest you move to another city.

Are you serious? We have an unneeded, blighting polluting power plant that alone produces TONS of pollutants each year. Even AES has admitted a new plant would run more and thus produce even more pollution. And you REALLY think that we should attack the 83% of Redondo residents who commute to work? What a joke. Eliminating this plant would take out the particulate pollution equivalent to elminating PCH or more. We CAN eliminate this power plant because it is unneeded... does anyone REALLY belive we will eliminate PCH? Get real....
And you should understand who you are attacking. Dan has chronic lung health problems. He really DOES does care about the tons of unnecessary pollution that come from this unneeded plant and its proximity to high density residential neighborhoods. How dare you speculate on his real motives and impugn his integrity, Mr. Czuleger. Shame on you.

Mr. Czuleger,
The power plant isn't necessary for electrical grid reliability. 7 different reports (from regulatory agencies and 1 commissioned, independent assessment report) document this fact. I hope you do some reading to understand the data yourself. AES Redondo produces particulate matter that is extremely damaging to the health and welfare of our community. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something great to better our environment and protect the health of everyone who lives here, by ridding our waterfront of Redondo's #1 source of pollution - AES. Gosh, we even care about YOUR health and don't want you to be exposed to toxins, either! There's no reasonable mentality that an UNNECESSARY power plant should be allowed to exist here, producing potentially lethal particulate matter.

This has nothing to do with view. My family lives a mile from the plant and can not see it from our home. This is the same for 95% plus of the entire south bay community. It's about our HEALTH.
It is unnecessary.
It is harmful.
Unneeded and harmful.
It is a no brainer.

It sounds as though Mr. Czuleger has received a healthy, and WELL-DESERVED tongue-lashing from the handful of people who are both close to AND very passionate about this issue. I commend them for their efforts, as I was blown away by both the callousness and blatant ignorance to the facts evidenced by Mr. Czuleger's remarks above. I have followed this battle somewhat from afar, as circumstances have forced me to be away for extended periods over the last few years. I was at the council meeting in Oct. or Nov, before I had to leave town again. To witness that debacle was for me, a real eye-opener to the indifference to the truth and right exhibited by the majority of the city council. I've said it before, and it still holds true; Bill Brand is the ONLY member of the R.B. City Council who has continuously fought, both in the most PROFESSIONAL, and zealous manner, for the well-being of Redondo's citizens. This is not a time for political correctness or pandering to the powers that be. It is literally a life and death matter for potentially THOUSANDS of locals, not only in Redondo, but throughout the South Bay, especially downwind from the plant. Mr. Czuleger, there is ample source information available, as has been highlighted here in the other comments. Please do yourself, and the community a huge service and read up on this vital issue, and perhaps become an advocate for this cause. It does affect ALL of us who call the South Bay our home; not just those with an ocean view.

Read this if you think the pollutants are not an issue: http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/newsrelease.php?id=149
"Approximately 9,000 people in California are estimated to die prematurely each year as a result of exposure to fine particle pollution, according to a report issued today by the California Air Resources Board."
"As a result of this review, the U.S. EPA concluded that there is a causal relationship between exposure to fine particle pollution and premature death. A causal relationship indicates the highest level of scientific certainty."
"Health studies show that when the PM2.5 concentration decreases so does the death rate."
We can decrease the PM2.5 concentration in Redondo and Hermosa by not building this unneeded, blighting power plant.

A new 630 MW power plant running at just 25% of capacity would produce about:
- 87,000 pounds of nitrogen oxides
-7000 pounds of sulfur dioxide
- 158,000 of carbon monoxide
- 47,000 pounds of particulate pollution
- 29,000 pounds of volatile organic compounds
-65,000 pounds of ammonia

Mr. Czuleger, shame on you. You personally attacked a special person in this community that wears his oxygen tank while out doing things to help better this community. Your comments are so inappropriate.
FACT: AES Redondo plant is the #1 source of pollution in Redondo per the EPA. Rebuilding will drastically increase the pollution our families are exposed to. AES has admitted this in their report. I lost my father due to chronic asthma and respiratory problems. He died at the age of 64. THE CONCERN OF THE RESIDENTS IN THIS COMMUNITY IS WARRANTED and we have every right to seek the facts and fight hard to make changes in this community for the betterment of all families. The facts couldn't be more clear--- 7 different reports all confirm this plant can easily retire with no impact on grid reliability. What more do you need? Now, why would any resident not seize this opportunity to help retire this plant when their contract expires?
C'mon Mr. Czuleger, YOU need to get real.

Fellow residents, please understand that people like Jim and Sheri work tirelessly and without any benefit other than to bring forth a better future for those in the area. To call them out personally, is frankly sickening.
We need more like them to combat the misinformation AES spreads through it's various channels . They are planning on polluting our home on a massive scale. The fact that they were "here first" or whatever is nonsense. Going down that road means that no matter how much they harm the residents and the environment it is fine so long as a corporation bought land there before you may have even been born (like me).
I admit, I'm not one to understand the science but I understand integrity. Jim, Sheri and all the others that work with them have it loads. The people working to prevent this unconscionable pollution should not only be thanked, but more importantly, listened to and supported by 100% of the residents.

Well said Dan Buck. If the emissions were not invisible, people might take more notice. If AES Redondo was required to color the emissions, then people could see the toxic plume that is causing the health problems we are suffering from (i.e. lung disease, shortness of breath, headaches, pre-mature births, etc.). I am sick of these AES power plant apologists. Let's get the zoning change on the ballot and get rid of this toxic plant. Let's also get rid of this "experiment gone wrong" desalination effort before it kills more sea life! Storm water reclamation is the future not desalination...clue. Sign the petition and give to the zoning change effort today: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/nopowerplant/signatures

I personally know Dan Buck & his warning is to help others who are unaware. He has spent most of his adult life living in the vicinity of the power plant, now living with the accumulative effect of particle pollution which is now being scrutinized as a causal factor in heart attacks. The damage that AES is causing is similar to that exposed in a recent CNN televised report on this particle pollution relationship to heart attacks, previously overlooked.. I share his concern for the senior residents of the Salvation Army residence on the corner of Beryl & Catalina, and know of others with respiratory problems aggravated by these particles upwind at Casa Amigos, another low cost housing residence for seniors
Are you related to the former Mayor Czuleger who could not have known these developments would transpire? I knew him, also, from my Church.

Thanks Mary. Modern science continues to learn and publish new information that no one knew 18 years ago when I moved nearer to AES to enjoy our harbor and associated lifestyle. Just this past December (2011) the California Air Resources Board printed the following press release entitled, "Fine particle pollution a threat to the cardiovascular health of Californians" http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/newsrelease.php?id=268
The article states, "Three new studies released today by the California Air Resources Board reveal that exposure to airborne fine-particulate matter significantly elevates the risk for premature deaths from heart disease in older adults and elevates incidence of strokes among post-menopausal women." It also reinforces our belief that AES should not be rebuilt at its present location. CARB further states, "These new studies underscore the need to eliminate the threat from California’s air."
Unfortunately it could take years before new regulations are enacted to prevent AES from generating the pollution that their current plans indicate. Our local citizens (and responsible city councilmen) could demonstrate a concern for our health by getting involved and taking a stand. In 2012 COPD will kill nearly 50% more women in California than breast cancer! Where is the outrage? Where is informed community support?

In addition to all the toxins cited there is also the considerable noise pollution. The last time one of the AES stacks made that horrendous bellow as it spewed out its emissions I saw several children flinch, run to the nearest adult and start crying! Who wants to live in a community where this could happen at any moment without warning? Even for adults this sound is incredibly loud and annoying. What kind of elected official would NOT be opposed to this plant on behalf of their constituency? Kudos and thank you Mr. Brand and Mr. Light and everyone else for your efforts to help rid our community of the AES power plant. And shame on you other councilmen for not caring about your community more. Don't hold your breath next election.

so if the "toxins were filtered out would all of you be still opposed to the unsightly power plant? Where would they go to film all of our TV programs like 24. The have art show there as well. we have one of the largest mural done by one of the greatest contemporary artists in the world. You all were behind taking out the salt water plunge as well. when we need more power you can have all of teh solar panels cover every square inch of the south bay and not get !05 of what the very real power plant can generate. When manufacturing returns to the south bay with it all of the great jobs we lost they will need power unless we conceded that to china as well. Americans need to get back the power and jobs that manufacturing creates and not live like chicken little all the time. My electric powered car is getting the majority of its power from coal powered plants not natural gas like this one is.

Wow your cogent argument has changed my mind, Al. When the power plant produces zero toxins, I will cast my vote to keep the current plant for filming cancelled TV shows, build the brand new one that we don't need, and tear out the harbor to rebuild the Plunge. And yes, I am the reason The Plunge was torn out even though I was not born yet. I also vote that we nuke China immediately so that we get all the South Bay manufacturing back (wait isn't that why the Mayor and Council fly over there every year?????)
How about some facts? If you live in the South Bay and you have an electric vehicle, your car is not getting most of its power from a coal fired plant. There is no natural gas fired power plant that filters out all of its toxins. Eight reports by multiple state agencies show we don't need the power. The power plant is our worst polluter, it impacts business revenues, it impacts business and residential property values and it is tightly surrounded by incompatible uses.
Sorry Al, this is a no brainer. We don't need the power. It's time for the plant to go.

Geez Al, please tell me you didn't bother reading all the factual data contained in the above comments before posting yours? The best thing for our city is to retire the existing plant when their contract expires. Personally, I am *ALL FOR* a waterfront change that will not only improve our health but also increase revenue to the city and bring more jobs! For those interested in doing their HW on this issue, it's quite simple.
