Redondo Resident Finishes 2nd in Triathlon

A Redondo Beach resident finished second in Sunday's Herbalife Triathlon Los Angeles. Chris Foster finished the course in 1:48:04—1:07 behind Cameron Dye of Boulder, Colo., who won the race for the second consecutive year.

Alicia Kaye of Clermont, Fla. was the women's winner.

Dye was in fourth following the 1,500-meter swim off Venice Beach, but his time of 53 minutes, 38 seconds was the fastest in the 40-kilometer (24.8- mile) bicycle segment to Staples Center, giving him a 3:02 lead over Ben Collins of Chicago.

Dye completed the 10-kilometer run through downtown Los Angeles in 32:39, giving him a total time of 1:46:57.

Collins finished third in 1:48:16. Hunter Kemper, a four-time Olympian who was 14th in the men's triathlon in the London Olympics, was fourth in 1:49:31.

Kaye was sixth in the swimming portion of the race and took the lead during the bicycle segment, where her time of 58:26, was the fastest.

Kaye completed the race in 1:57:57. Lauren Gross of Mount Pleasant, S.C. was second in 1:59.30 and Flora Duffy of Bermuda third in 1:59:50.

Duffy was 45th in the women's triathlon in the London Olympics.

Dye and Kaye each received $11,000—$10,000 for winning the race and $1,000 for the fastest time in the bicycle segment.

Foster, who is sponsored by local retailer Triathlon Lab, received $6,000—$5,000 for finishing second and $1,000 for having the fastest time in the run, 30:03. Gross received $5,000 for finishing second

The other $1,000 bonus in the men's race went to Jimmy Seear of Australia for having the fastest time in the swimming portion, 18:48.

The other $1,000 bonuses in the women's race went to Liz Blatchford of Great Britain for having the fastest time in the swimming portion, 20:30, and Duffy for having the fastest time in the run, 33:22.

The 13th edition of the race drew a field of about 2,500 competitors from 30 states, the District of Columbia and 13 nations, including a record 43 professionals, according to organizers.
