Roast Is a Different Shade of Green

Green Roast Coffee, a new eco-friendly coffeehouse, slips artfully into Redondo Beach.

is a new coffeehouse that's tucked away on Pacific Coast Highway. It prides itself on using fair-trade organic coffee beans, which are roasted on the premises. Another characteristic that sets this coffeehouse apart is its use of the hand-pour method of coffee-making. Sure, it takes two minutes longer to prepare, but it's worth it. In the end, the coffee is more flavorful and less bitter than its machine-brewed counterparts.

Green Roast Coffee also carries organic teas and syrups as well as a good assortment of organic goodies. Vegan treats can also be found in the pastry case.

The walls of the shop are adorned with colorful artwork that changes monthly. This month's artwork is by Lorna Brown, a former figure-skating champion, so the theme is, naturally, skating. Abstract paintings and other works depict figure skaters gliding on the ice, and colorful scarves enhance the display. Local artists can apply to be featured at the restaurant by emailing the staff.

I loved all of the bright artwork on the walls and didn't mind looking at each piece while waiting for my hand-poured mocha java, which was brought to my table piping hot. After several moments, I was able to take my first sip. It was very smooth, with hints of chocolate in the mix. It didn't need too much sugar, as there was no bitter taste.

The cranberry muffin, made with organic ingredients, was just the right amount of tart and sweet. It was also very moist and didn't leave me with a stomachache from too much sugar. The muffin did crumble easily, requiring extra napkins.

I got my coffee and muffin for a little more than $5, which is a good deal. The coffeehouse also has free Wi-Fi. It's a small shop and it's pretty quiet, so it would be a good spot to get some work done.

Given the place's friendly staff and good products, I hope to see Green Roast Coffee become successful and stay around for a while.
