Suspect Escapes From Courthouse

Deputies and Torrance police officers have called off the active search for Danny Navarro. Navarro was in court for arraignment in a burglary case.

A burglary suspect bolted from the Torrance Courthouse during his arraignment today when he heard a prosecutor ask a judge to raise his bail, the sheriff's department reported.

"We know who he is, and [we] recommend he turn himself in," said sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker.

Danny Navarro, 20, of Los Angeles, reported to the Maple Avenue courthouse for arraignment in a misdemeanor burglary case, Parker said.

Navarro had been freed on $20,000 bail following his Nov. 27 arrest in Redondo Beach.

During his 10:30 a.m. court appearance, "a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney asked the court to raise the defendant's bail from $20,000 up to $70,000," Parker said. "Before any action could be taken by the court, or any formal remand [into custody] order could be made, the defendant ran out of the courtroom."

Sheriff's deputies and Torrance police officers searched for Navarro for about an hour before calling off their active search. The judge issued a bench warrant for Navarro's arrest with bail set at $70,000.
