Muratsuchi Bill Aims to Improve Electricity Reliability

AB 66 calls for greater transparency and remediation

(Manhattan Beach, CA) – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) convened a press conference today to rally support for AB 66, a bill he introduced that would require the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to mandate an electrical corporation to include in an annual reliability report, information on system reliability, including the frequency and duration of interruptions in services. The CPUC would develop the report and would be expected to use the information to require remediation where repeated deficiencies are identified in the same region.

Since 2008, the city of Rancho Palos Verdes and other cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula have dealt with an average of twenty-six power outages a year.  A 2012 Rancho Palos Verdes staff report cited over 100 unscheduled outages from 2008-2011 occurring within the city.

“Transparency has been shown to be good for business and for consumer relations,” said Muratsuchi, “AB 66 provides Californians with information they have a right to know, and provides a mechanism for accountability for rate payers as well as energy providers.”
