2012: The Year of Steve

I've decided to make 2012 the Year of Me. No more resolutions for me—I am setting solid goals and going for it. How will you make this the Year of You?

On New Year’s Day we had a gathering of friends at our home to watch the final week of regulation NFL football. Our friend Steve not-so-jokingly declared that 2012 was the Year of Steve. We laughed at the time, but it has actually served as a catalyst for me to set some serious goals for the year ahead. Thank you, Steve.

At the beginning of 2011, I participated in an exercise with one of my favorite bloggers/authors/speakers, Chris Brogan, where I listed three words for that year.  Rather than make impossible resolutions, he challenged us to commit to the three words and work at them all year long. In 2011, my three words had to do with collaboration and helping others.

For 2012, I have decided to be like Steve. I am going to make this my year and devote my energy to growing my business, increasing my personal brand and raising my level of engagement in the social web. Basically, I am hiring me to represent me.

And now, my 3 words for 2012, The Year of Angela:

Believe: I have been running a successful PR business since 2003, yet I still question my own expertise and value. That ends today. I am committing to believe in myself, my business, my team and the value I bring to my clients. (And raising my rates!)

Conquer: Putting yourself “out there” is a scary proposition, but I am going for it.  I will pursue public speaking, write more articles, ramp up my blogging, collaborate with other professionals and get over my fear of video. I have already begun a monthly workshop for small business owners and taken a huge step by submitting a panel idea to a social media conference to be held in June (wish me luck).

Publish: By publish, I don’t necessarily mean a book, although that’s on the list. By publish I mean “do it.” Stop talking about all the things I want to create and just do them already. This includes video, blogging, speaking, mentoring and everything other way I can put myself "out there."

So in the Year of Angela, I will Believe in what I have to offer, Conquer my fear and just hit Publish.

If Steve can motivate me to refocus and change my life, what can the Year of Steve do for you?  I challenge you to make 2012 the Year of ______________(your name here.)

If you’re curious, you can see my 2011 words along with the other folks who participated at Chris’ blog. While you’re there, check out his 2012 post for great ideas to implement your words and, what the hell, you may as well subscribe!

Mary, I read your posts throughout the Measure A campaign. You may want to re-read your posts whenRead More you cast stones about "dividing a city". There wasn't much substantiation to any of your posts-- mostly just attacks on Jim Light. Do Aspel and Ginsburg condone this sort of behavior since you are such a strong voice for them?

http://www.prado2013.com/ Voters should read this before casting their ballot. Dianne Prado,Read More former District 1 candidate, exposes the electioneering, intimidation and cronyism of this campaign.

Perhaps we should just turn our heads and let the City Council violate the law. Is that what youRead More would do Mr H? The City Charter is the law of Redondo. The Council chose knowingly to violate it. When the judge found them in violation, the same Council doubled the costs with a frivolous appeal. This time three judges threw it out. Had the Council followed the Charter, there would be zero costs. If you want to hold anyone accountable, it should be those who cast the vote to violate the City Charter and disenfranchise the voters of Redondo. You should not hold me and the over 200 residents who contributed to the lawsuit to uphold the City Charter responsible for the Council's illegal action.

We are still waiting for someone -- perhaps the author of this post -- to make a coherent,Read More fact-based argument in favor of Mr. Diels. With all due respect, conclusory hopes and dreams of "reform" will not get 'er done in the face of Mr. Diels' voting record as City Councilman. Thankfully, one good thing has come of the author's blog post. The facts and blog posts have vindicated the honesty and integrity of the campaigns run by Dawn Esser and Chris Cagle, against a baseless attack by Mrs. Diels. If I had a magic mand, I would wave it and change the City Charter so that Dawn and Chris could share the position of Treasurer.

Mr. Azouz: Thank you. I am glad some neighbors find value in what I do, but more importantly IRead More respect the fact that you take the time to do your own homework. If you have expertise in a particular area that can benefit the City, feel free to contact me off line. That goes for anyone. After the election, I have a "big idea" that I want to promote for our City. When Bill Brand and Steve Aspel both agree that my idea is promising, then I think we are on the right track. I'll be curious to learn what the City Manager has to say.
