Hit a Home Run With Your Business

To grown your business, sometimes you have to think outside of the stadium like the L.A. Dodgers did this week.

This week I had the pleasure of working with some Los Angeles Dodgers players who volunteered to build with my client, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles. The day was coordinated by Bank of America as part of their commitment to supporting housing initiatives in the communities they serve. I have worked with Habitat for Humanity for eight years and there have been many high profile volunteers (such as President Jimmy Carter) but this one was extra fun, having grown up at Dodger stadium.

On hand were players Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw and Josh Lindblom, as well as Dodger great Maury Wills. Clayton and Josh even brought their wives along, who were wicked with the sledgehammers!

This kind of awareness is incredibly valuable for Habitat for Humanity so that more people learn about how they work with low-income families and individuals to purchase homes. We had many media outlets there and all our volunteers were tweeting and posting photos to Facebook and Instagram. From a PR perspective, it rocked!

Your business could probably use this type of awareness too, but how in the world will you get the Dodgers to your business? The truth is you most likely won’t. But there are probably some influential folks in your community who could get involved with you, or non-profits you can get involved with to broaden your reach.

Here are two ways to increase awareness in your community:

  1. Get involved. Check out community organizations, non-profits, schools, clubs and business coalitions to see if there’s a natural fit for what you do and reach out to see how you can help. You may be able to have a fundraiser in your store or affordably sponsor an event or newsletter that reaches your community.
  2. Seek out influential spokespeople. Is there a local deejay, blogger, politician or “celebrity” in your community? Ask them to donate their time or hire them to host an event with your business.

Be sure to publicize your community involvement on your website, blog and signage in your business. And don’t be afraid to enlist the help of your Facebook friends and customers! I hope you hit one out of the park!
