Beach Cities Aren't Her Only Love

Hawaii is a beautiful vacation spot for all ages.

I have a loyalty to the South Bay, and the Beach Cities in particular. I love living here. But, I have another love: Hawaii.

Out of the eight Hawaiian Islands, I have traveled to four of them. Although I haven't been to a Hawaiian Island I didn't like, I must admit that Oahu holds a special place in my heart. And having family there just makes visiting that much more special.

Whenever I visit any one of the islands, I pick up a "101 Things To Do in Hawaii" magazine at the airport for ideas. I am the most familiar with Oahu, so when I visit, I always have a running list of where I want to go and what I would like to do.

Here are some of my favorite inexpensive or free things to do when I'm on the island of Oahu.

No matter how many times I have seen Halona Blow Hole, there is something really fun about seeing water shooting several feet in the air through a lava tube. This is a great spot to take some pictures, but stay behind the rail.

Another great place, that I think is a must see, is the Pali Lookout. The view is amazing, but is always really windy, which is just part of the fun--but hold on to your hat, sunglasses and kid's hand. Pali Lookout has history and significance to the Hawaiian people. In 1795, King Kamehameha I and his warriors defeated an army and claimed victory, uniting all of the Hawaiian Islands.

I love to hike up to Makapu’u Point lighthouse. This hike is approximately 2 miles round trip and steep in some areas, but is well worth the trip. The view is breathtaking, and if you are lucky, you may spot humpback whales in the ocean.

I always look forward to taking a drive to the north shore to see Pipeline, a famous surf spot. I have a great time watching local surfers. Plus, when you feel the need to get out of the car and stretch your legs, you can stop in Hale’iwa for Matsumoto’s Shaved Ice. Don’t let the long line scare you; you’ll be happy you waited.

Our kids wake up first thing in the morning wanting shaved ice. Fortunately, Island Snow is close to where we stay. You may recognize Island Snow from news stories covering the Obama family's vacation.

When visiting Hawaii, no matter which island we choose, getting in the ocean is a must. The water is the perfect temperature, even in winter.

I am always amazed by how clear the water is in Hawaii. You can see the reef and the ocean floor so easily when paddling out on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Plus, the water is the most beautiful shade of blue.

The Hawaiian Islands are rich with history, and I highly recommend going to the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. The Hawaiian Hall is my favorite part of the museum and I have been there many times.

Whether you are the type of person who likes to stay active and kayak or stand-up paddleboard or you just like to kick back and enjoy the view, Hawaii is the perfect place.

If you are thinking about where you would like to spend spring break or your summer vacation, consider Hawaii. And maybe you’ll even see one of your favorite TV shows being filmed on the beach in Waikiki.

Aloha!
