Cops Collect Tips for Special Olympics

Redondo Beach police officers participate in a fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Southern California.

Local police departments raised more than $2,700 for the Special Olympics of Southern California on Saturday during a Tip-a-Cop event at the South Bay Galleria's Red Robin restaurant.

Officers from the Redondo Beach, Torrance, Gardena and El Segundo police departments participated in the fundraiser at the Galleria, according to RBPD officer Scot Martin.

In a Tip-a-Cop event, police officers serve as celebrity waiters at restaurants, then donate tips they receive to the Special Olympics, according to the Special Olympics Southern California website.

On Saturday, the day shift crew made $1,128 in tips, while the afternoon and evening shift collected $1,638, Martin said.

Tip-a-Cop events support the Law Enforcement Torch Run—one of the largest fundraising arms of the Special Olympics, according to the organization. The tips, which are tax-deductible, support sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
