County Accepting Lifeguard Applications

The application period for the Los Angeles County Lifeguards ends Sept. 20.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is now accepting applications for new lifeguards to patrol county beaches.

The application filing period opened Aug. 9 and will continue through Sept. 20, according to the Los Angeles County Ocean Lifeguards website. The required 1,000-meter swim exam will take place Oct. 13, and the top 100-120 finishers will continue to the interview portion of the application.


The starting wage for a lifeguard is $21.29 per hour, with an 11 percent bonus for those who are also emergency medical technicians. Benefits include paid vacation time, paid sick time, possible medical insurance, a flexible work schedule and paid workouts, according to the website.

Candidates must fill out an application, attach a swim certificate and send them to the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Personnel Office.

Once hired, lifeguards can either work full-time during the summer or a minimum of 20 recurrent shift.
