Hundreds Honor John Parsons

Hundreds of people dressed in Tommy Bahama shirts and other Hawaiian-themed attire gathered at American Martyrs Church in Manhattan Beach on Friday morning to honor John Parsons, a former Redondo Beach city councilman and planning commissioner.

Parsons died the morning of Aug. 22 after suffering a stroke at the end of the Aug. 20 city council meeting. He had twice addressed the council that evening, and he seemed even more jovial than usual, Redondo Beach Mayor Steve Aspel, who was a childhood friend of Parsons', told Patch last week.

Friends and family read prayers, while his daughters gave the eulogy  during Friday's service, which was followed by a celebration of life at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.
