Kohls to Host Life Jacket Trade-In

From 4-6 p.m., Kohls will host a life jacket trade-in where boaters can have their life jackets inspected.

As part of the California Department of Boating and Waterways 14th Annual Life Jacket Trade-In, Kohls in North Redondo Beach will have professionals on hand to inspect life jackets Friday from 4-6 p.m.

"The life jacket trade-in gives water enthusiasts the opportunity to have their life jackets inspected by professionals," according to a news release from the DBW. "If a life jacket is found to be outgrown or unserviceable, a new, properly fitted Coast Guard-approved life jacket will be given in exchange."

The exchange is limited to one life jacket per family while supplies last.

According to the DBW, of the 53 boating fatalities reported last year, 33 were the result of drownings—and none of the drowning victims were wearing life jackets.

California law requires all children under age 13; every person on board a personal watercraft, such as a jet ski; or anyone being towed behind a vessel to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, according to the DBW. Vessels must also have enough life jackets for every person on board.

The giveaway is being conducted in conjunction with National Safe Boating Week. For more information on the life jacket trade-in events across the state, visit WearItCalifornia.com.

Kohls is located at 1799 Hawthorne Blvd.
