My Interview With an Amazon

Redondo Beach Patch Editor Nicole Mooradian talks about her meeting with Amazon Eve, the world's tallest model.

As I waited at the pier for , I had knots in my stomach. It was my first interview with any sort of celebrity, and I'll admit it—I was nervous. Here I was, preparing to interview the world's tallest model … and did I mention that I'm only 4 feet 10 inches tall?

I'll admit it, people gawked as we walked up to . It's hard not to stare at the nearly 3-foot height difference, especially when Eve was wearing her heels.

Almost immediately, she put me at ease. She was funny, easy to talk to, and quite humble about her success.

We talked about her rise to stardom, her European travels and shoes.

Yes, shoes.

Our shoe sizes are on opposite ends of the spectrum. She wears a size 14; I wear a 4. Needless to say, it's rather difficult to find shoes that actually fit our feet.

And yet, our inability to find shoes in our respective sizes means that when we do find a pair that we like that fits, we buy it. We hoard shoes. She has more than 200 pairs of shoes. I might have a tenth of that number.

Talking about shoes may seem rather mundane; however, even though it wasn't the first thing we discussed, it served as an excellent icebreaker. Here we were at the opposite ends of the height spectrum, and we found we had similar problems when it came to shopping.

I was amazed at her confidence. When she headed to the buffet to grab some food, she discovered that she was too tall to comfortably reach under the tables' hoods. (See attached photo—she told me to take it!) She was able to laugh at the inconvenience.

"I changed the meaning of why people were staring at me," she later explained.

As we left the restaurant to take some photos, people gawked again—but this time, it didn't feel like they were staring at two freaks of nature. They were staring at two attractive women who happened to have extreme differences in height.

I've always been rather insecure about my height (or lack thereof), but if Eve can change the meaning of why people stare at her, then so can I.
