Mom's Cancer Battle Inspires Student

One college student from Redondo Beach is doing his part to support his mother, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time.

Brett Beebe, who attends Western Michigan University, is selling T-shirts to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation. So far, he's raised more than $11,000.

Redondo Beach resident and hairstylist Justina Tuck will be attending the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Creative Arts Awards on Sept. 10 in hopes of taking home a shiny statuette.

Tuck is part of the Emmy-nominated team competing for Outstanding Hairstyling for a Multi-Camera Series or Special.

Tuck, who used to run Tease Me Hair Design in Redondo Beach, has also styled hair for General Hospital, Entourage, Sons of Anarchy and True Blood.

NPR Recognizes Redondo Beach Mayor

In Part No. 4 of its six-part series on America's mayors, NPR profiles Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin. Calling him a modern version of the "Rockefeller Republican," the news organization says Gin's "open, collaborative nature" has enabled the city to avoid debt.
 

Children's Book Offers Window Into Past

Dawn Wynn's children's book I Remember When… isn't your "typical touch-and-feel book," the author told the Beach Reporter. Instead of petting a soft animal, readers can dial a rotary telephone, type on typewriter keys or spin a vinyl record.

The book was inspired by memories of her grandmother, said Wynn, who lives in Redondo Beach. She hopes that it will help children learn to love reading.

Lifeguard Honored for Rescue

Lifeguard Captain Mike Inscore, a resident of Redondo Beach, was recently awarded a Medal of Valor for going above the call of duty when he helped rescue a woman who jumped off a Palos Verdes cliff.

Dentist to Put Smile on Victim's Face

A Redondo Beach dental surgeon will donate his services to repair the teeth of Martin Sanchez, who was injured in a Long Beach gay hate crime.

Dental surgeon Michael Fulbright will fix cracked teeth and possibly perform three root canals.
