Redondo Beach

Waterfront Revitalization Moves Forward: The Redondo Beach City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday night to perform an environmental review of El Segundo-based developer CenterCal Properties' plans for the Redondo Beach Pier and surrounding areas.

Waxman Recognizes Redondo Boston Bombing Survivor: Hollywood Riviera resident John Odom, who sustained life-threatening injuries during the Boston Marathon bombings in April, was honored Friday in Washington D.C. with an entry in the Congressional Record by Rep. Henry Waxman.

South Bay Resident Tests Positive for West Nile Virus: Five people in Los Angeles County tested positive for West Nile virus, making them the county's first human cases of the 2013 season, according to the county Department of Public Health. At least one person who tested positive was from the South Bay, according to  Los Angeles County Department of Public Health spokesman Allen Solomon.

Manhattan Beach

Fire Department Rescues Two Nighttime Pier Jumpers: Two young men who jumped off the Manhattan Beach Pier Tuesday around 9:30 p.m. were rescued by the quick efforts of the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, said Battalion Chief Ken Shuck.

Charlie Saikley 6-Man Tournament Produces Few Arrests: In its second year of weekday competition, the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament appears to have moved beyond the raucous party atmosphere it became known for when it was held on the weekend. On opening day Wednesday, police arrested two and issued some citations, a marked improvement from 2011, the last time the tourney was held on a weekend.

UPDATE: Ballona Creek Bike Attack Injures Manhattan Beach Man: Manhattan Beach school board member Bill Fournell is home from the hospital recovering from wounds suffered when three men attempted to steal his bike in Culver City on the Ballona Creek Bike Path on July 19.

Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach Selects New Police Chief: Hermosa Beach's city manager chose LAPD Cmdr. Sharon Papa as the city's new police chief, city officials confirmed Thursday. Papa, formerly a 17-year Metro police officer who joined the LAPD in a 1997 merger, and Los Angeles County Assistant Sheriff Cecil Rhambo were finalists for the position, which had been vacant nearly 18 months.

Search for Missing Hermosa Beach Man Resumes: Authorities hunting for Erik Lamberg, a missing Hermosa Beach man, will return next week to the area in which a trained dog picked up a scent Wednesday, said Lt. Shannon Barney of the Mendocino County Sheriff's Department.

The Actors' Colony Launches in Hermosa Beach: Actor Tobe Sexton decided to fill in the acting gap in the South Bay by launching The Actors' Colony, a place where budding actors and actresses could hone the craft of acting beyond what musical theater offers.

Lieu Asks for Investigation Into Tank Farm Near RPV: State Sen. Ted Lieu has asked the Office of the State Fire Marshal to conduct an investigation and risk analysis of a liquid bulk storage facility owned and operated by Rancho LPG Holdings LLC in San Pedro.

Foul Play Not Suspected in Parking Lot Death, Authorities Say: A man died in the parking lot of the Ralphs grocery store at the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard and Crest Road in Rancho Palos Verdes on Wednesday morning. According to Lt. John Wolak of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lomita Station, paramedics were called to the scene shortly before 8 a.m. and were unable to revive him.

Panga Boat Driver Gets 5 Years in Prison: A Mexican national was sentenced today to five years in federal prison for smuggling 19 undocumented immigrants—including some who were forced to sit on gasoline containers during the 12-hour trip—from Mexico to Palos Verdes aboard an overloaded panga boat.
