Thousands of rowdy soccer fans packed Veterans Park in Redondo Beach today to watch Team U.S.A. take on Belgium in the knock- out round of the World Cup, but their hopes were dashed when the United States lost 2-1.
Fans waved American flags and chanted "USA" during the live ESPN telecast of the match from Salvador, Brazil, that was shown on a big-screen television placed on a stage in the park.
The viewing party was organized by the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer and included appearances by the team's Star Squad promotional and entertainment group, mascot Cozmo and Futboleros freestyle soccer performance team.
A watch party was also held in Long Beach on Pine Avenue between First and Third streets, with the game shown on a giant LED screen.
The only time the U.S. defeated Belgium was in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.
Belgium will face Argentina, which beat Switzerland earlier today, Saturday in a quarterfinal.
