Weekend Planner: Remembering 9/11
Start the weekend off with fun activities, but Sunday calls for a more serious note as we remember 9/11.
Where and when: Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Blvd., Rolling Hills Estates; Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Why go: Head over to the park this weekend and celebrate this long-standing equestrian tradition and fundraiser. Besides the show, other activities include a petting zoo, pony rides and face painting. Friday is free admission.

Why go: Raising money for the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the annual D-Man Festival is named for South Bay surfer Darren D-Man Marsee, who passed away from the disease in 2005. Line up includes performances from Tomorrows Bad Seeds, The Black Pacific, Hoist the Colors and more.

Why go: Poghosyan, who made her Carnegie Hall debut at the young age of 23, comes to the South Bay for a series of classical concerts. Saturday, she'll play in Manhattan Beach as part of Trinity Lutheran's 10 Year Anniversary of "The Previews" concerts; Sunday, the pianist heads over to Rancho Palos Verdes .

Why go: It's Saturday night—get your party on with Fan Valen, a high-energy rock tribute act to Van Halen. Opening sets by Stone Temple Co-Pilots (an STP tribute), Without Warning and Thunderchief. 21 and over, please.

Why go: Bring a candle to Reverend Maitreya Bhagavan Friend's Empty Chair Memorial and and pay respects to those lost in the 9/11 tragedy, as well as America's fighting men and women who have given their lives for this country.

Where and when: Wherever you are; 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sunday
Why go: Throughout the nation, first responders, houses of worship, and other establishments will sound sirens and bells every hour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in a sign to stop and take a minute to remember those taken from us in 9/11.
