Art Show Powers Up

Redondo Beach Art Group gets ready for its fifth-annual annual fundraiser this weekend.

Georgette Gantner woke up Wednesday morning with a mission: To turn the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center into a gallery overnight.

The president of Redondo Beach Art Group was at the center early in the day, overseeing the installation of this weekend's Power of Art show.

"We'll have hangers working until midnight or later," Gantner said.

The three-day event will showcase more than 170 pieces of art from 83 artists. The festivities kick off Friday night with an opening reception and silent auction, continuing through the weekend with workshops and music performances.

The show, now in its fifth year, is designed to raise money so that the group can afford a permanent home. The nonprofit organization has raised $80,000 so far, Gantner said.

"It's been slow but sure," she Gantner.

This will be the first Power of Art at the city's Performing Arts Center. Previous venues included the AES Redondo Beach Power Plant and the site of the former Venezia restaurant.

Previous shows have drawn 5,000 attendees over the course of a weekend, Gantner said. Those shows took place in October instead of summer. The group moved up the event because of the availability of the Performing Arts Center.

Admission to the show is free. For more details, visit redondobeachartgroup.org.
