Beach Cities Weekend: Sidewalk Sales, Outdoor Concerts and a Paddle Board Race

Trying to decide how to spend the last few days before school starts? Here are some suggestions.

Summer doesn't officially end for several weeks, but with school about to start, it's definitely on its last legs. So, how to spend one of the few remaining summer weekends left? You've got your choice of sidewalk sales, outdoor concerts and a paddle board race Sunday morning in Manhattan Beach. 

Sidewalk sales

Riviera Village and the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce are both conducting sidewalk sales this weekend. Downtown Manhattan Beach merchants began their sale Friday and will resume Saturday. The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. For more information, call (310) 545-5313.

Merchants in Redondo Beach's Riviera Village are also taking to the sidewalks over the weekend in hopes of ringing up back to school purchases and more. 

Paddle over to Manhattan Beach

Early Sunday morning, ocean racers will take to the water in Catalina and paddle as fast as they can to the Manhattan Beach pier. The fastest is expected to arrive around 11 a.m. The 32-mile Catalina Classic Paddleboard Championship has roots stretching back to 1955. The race was revived after a 20-year hiatus in 1982. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier.  

Concerts, free and otherwise

Brixton South Bay is hosting a free concert on the Redondo Beach Pier from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The concert will feature performances by J.R. Richards, lead singer of Dishwalla, and Shaun Hague. Eric Lindell will take to the stage at Saint Rocke in Hermosa on Saturday night with Chuck Alvarez as guest. Tickets cost $12. Phone: 310 372-0035. 

There will be two free outdoor concerts on Sunday evening. The  Tom Nolan Band will perform at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. In Hermosa Beach, Tyrone Wells will perform with guest Chris Pierce at the pier. The concert begins at 5:30 p.m. and continues until sunset.
