Did 'Bar Rescue' Save Breakwall?

Sunday's episode of 'Bar Rescue' shows host Jon Taffer transform Kilkenny's into Breakwall on the pier.

Original story:

One of Spike TV’s newest reality series, Bar Rescue, will feature the old on the in Sunday’s episode.

As part of the show, which focuses on helping failing establishments turn their fortunes around, Jon Taffer revamped the menu, redecorated the venue and retrained the staff, into a surf barbecue joint. To go along with the establishment’s new look, Taffer gave it a new name: .

So, were Taffer’s changes effective?

“Business has been great—I've seen the changes here, and especially in my pockets,” said bartender Carlos Lara. “We got a lot of surfer people who come out, a lot of new customers.”

Before the makeover, “we used to have a lot of old people,” Lara said, “but now we have a … younger crowd in here.”

Manhattan Beach resident Allie Speed, who co-owns the bar with sister Alexis Speed, expressed similar sentiments.

“Our customer base is so fun—we get people anywhere from 21 to 60 that like the beach, that are happy, that are hanging out … We have awesome people come here that like to drink and party and have fun,” Speed said.

Taffer’s revamp is helping the bar reach “a different part of the community—young, surfer-type people,” she said.

There’s still some nostalgia for the old Kilkenny’s.

“We miss the name,” Lara said. “[Customers] still call and ask if it's still Kilkenny's. We, the staff, just still call it 'the pub' or 'Kilkenny's,' but [the makeover] was a positive change in the restaurant.”

Nevertheless, a customer during Wednesday’s Happy Hour said he noticed remnants of Kilkenny's mixed with the new look.

“As a bar I don't remember it too well,” said Albert Knapp of Redondo Beach. He admitted that he had been to Kilkenny’s only a few times before it became Breakwall; however, he didn’t feel the transformation was complete.

“I feel like the décor is transient,” said Knapp. “There's half [of] Kilkenny's left, and then there's surfboards hanging from the ceiling.”

Long Beach resident Sheena, who declined to give her last name, described the atmosphere as “a little dead” on Wednesday night.

“I like the nachos and the view,” said Sheena, who was visiting Breakwall for the first time. “There's a bunch of flies when we walked in.”

Sheena was not the only one who complimented the food.

Lisa Badaoui, visiting from Grafton, New South Wales in Australia, was enjoying the view from the bar for the second time within about a week.

“This is the only place I've been in,” Badaoui said. “We had chicken wings for the second time—that's how good they are.”

And the drinks?

“Drinks are good,” she said, giving her gin-and-tonic a 10 out of 10.

Overall, she gave the bar a positive review.

“On Saturday [the atmosphere] was fantastic, but today it's nice, but it's not very busy,” she said.

I sure hope those two girls are reading all these comments on that loser Carlos...GM???? I think that stands for giant moron not general manager! Are you kidding me? All he is worried about is money in HIS pocket and free booze and food. OMG ladies, buy a freakin' clue!!! I watched this episode and don't even live in CA but got extremely frustrated just watching the stupidity of those two girls getting ramrodded by this con. Get your act together and hire someone that knows what they are doing and has experience in the bar and restaurant business. It's time to grow up and grow some kahunas. If you want to keep this place then shed that bum because that is all he is. LOSER!!!!!!!

Wow, loved this episode! This show has been really insightful on some of the things it takes to run a business. I am extremely happy for those girls and love their story in how they opened KilKennys. Its something i still want to do when I retire. The history between them and Carlos seem to be blinding them from (what will be) keepin BreakWall successful. The said part is they seem pretty content to not give up on him until that business goes bankrupt. I hate when people take kindness for weakness like he has. Man up and take responsibility for your ex-girls business! If the business starts losing money again will he (or they) ever admit that he is the problem? The dude has major mind control on them girls. I really hope this business is still around when I retire out in CA. BTW... I'm 13 yrs active duty AF stationed out in NC (for the meantime). 7 years left.. So now you have another goal, stay open so I can party out there! Much love... Jrez

We were the only customers when we walked in yesterday...this place is really rundown now. It doesn't look like it will be open much longer. 1 employee and 2 customers on a Thursday night with bowl games on = Chapter 13.

i agree with you completely I am right now as I write this in the process of watching the episode and the excuse for a GM carlos, the way he acted in his first conversation with John Taffer well I don't know what to say. There are so many good decent bar owners who would love to have gotten that 2nd chance...............Now Im hearing the bar has sinced failed, sad............

Why did it close? When?
Nicole Mooradian (Editor) March 03, 2012 at 01:08 AM
We've reached out to the owners about why it closed, and we'll have a story about it next week.

Trust me, the girls didn't care about the business. The capital was given by rich daddy and that's why they couldn't hold on to it. Carlos had shit on the girls, especially his ex. That's why they wouldn't fire him. Our paychecks started bouncing 2 months after I started working there and they were always 2 months late. At first the tips were decent, but with the way they do business, it soon went downhill. They were in the process of being sued by so many of the employees that they lied to and screwed out of their money that Im not surprised they're closed. Hopefully now they'll start taking responsibility, they're getting old themselves.

The enabling sisters failed because they had the best consultant and couldn't fire the cancer within; Carlos. What a shame. They had a second chance, but let this be a lesson to all businesses... when you enable people who are sabotaging, you will always LOSE. ---

I liked John's concept and marketing research. Wonder if place has new tenants. Management needs to be fun and organized and involved with community. Went to Breakwall NewYears but it looks like they had a good New Years Eve n closed the next day but sign was down. So i didn't know if place was closed or sign fell off. Too bad ditzy girls didn't have a clue how to manage their lives better. Wouldn't mind a sugar daddy helping me run a place like that!!

Ya know, when someone has dirt on you and 900000 dollars of debt rest in the balance, just come clean. Admit what he's got on you, face the music and fire that lowlife loser sleezebag con! He used you two girls as a doormat and worse got paid to hang out and party in your bar at will. He broke you just because he knew you did something you might be ashamed or embarrassed about. Holy crap! I want to kick this guys ass so bad but in life you get what you give so I'm guessing Carlos is sitting in a big pile of S**t right now and doesn't have the sense to realize he ruined a great bar in Redondo. I lived there, I drank there and starboard attitude across the way at least know what it takes to make a business run well. Relationships with customers that last and service that comes from the heart. Goodbye Breakwall and Kilkennys, Carlos killed you!

Walked by the other day, and not sure what's going in in their place, however, there's a lot of construction work going, so, hopefully a decent bar and grill will rise up in its place.
DonWas August 25, 2012 at 04:24 AM
Carlos has control over those 2 Brainless Betties because he is DOING them both. It's also kind of like a S&M influence, A predator and prey type relationship where only 1 of them benefit............

Carlos is still hitting his ex. I'm a body expert and that much is clear She has his dick on her mind 24 7 that's y she can't get shit done. As far as the sisters,,. Clearly tell that was not their money. They just in it for the ride they could care less and back to the Carlos dude BIGGEST LAZIEST STUPIDIEST MIGHA I HAVE EVER SEEN all three deserve each other
Stephen wheeler September 02, 2012 at 08:28 PM
So...I couldn't help but be curious as to what the hell a "body expert" is. Noticed you didn't follow up with any professional title so it can safely be assumed you are just trying to make readers respect or give credit to what is likely just your opinion. Even worse, you follow up with a comment about how she this about his "dick" all day. So, is that in your expert opinion how women who are being beaten respond? Makes me wonder about the lucky woman in your life, if there is one.

m moses October 07, 2012 at 05:17 AM
carlos wanted it closed, the poor sad girls was to sorry to see that he was the problem. wonder what was wrong with the girls, they couldn't see that? WHY !
Stupid business owners = Great TV November 21, 2012 at 11:50 PM
You are an idiot. "Still hitting his ex" doesn't mean physical abuse, you moron! It means CARLOS IS STILL PORKIN' HER! Boy, I hope you don't think "porkin'" means he's throwing bacon at her...
Job paul January 15, 2013 at 06:17 AM
That Carlos was a sociopath that munipulates people, gains control of them, and destroyed them and their business. It was sad that the owners couldn't see that. They should have cleaned house not only with the bar name and theme , they should have got rid of Carlos and 50% of that worthless crew.
Carl Weathers February 08, 2013 at 10:42 AM
You guys are comical morons. I've been to this place many times, as both Kilkenny's and "Breakwall"... I hate to break your hearts, but Breakwall was an instant failure and died within 4 months. Carlos was a doofus, it's true, but the owners were the real problem. This show was the only time anybody has ever seen them. Just a couple of girls who wasted an inheritance thinking they could run an "Irish" bar.
Carl Weathers February 08, 2013 at 10:45 AM
I know Carlos. Not well. Just another doofus. Not the problem. Crappy bar, crappy location, crappy owners. Best manager in the world couldn't have saved that dump.

Kenny Barrev March 12, 2013 at 01:43 PM
Love that everybody buys into the "bad guy" thing. The focus should be on the owners. Don't put your inheritance into a bar just to have a place to party!
cat April 15, 2013 at 09:18 AM
Offense taken at your comment about "weak women". Weak PEOPLE should not run businesses! Penises and vaginas don't run businesses, people do!
