Gallery Founder: Art Scene 'Improving'

Cannery Row founder Richard Stephens continues Redondo Beach's Bohemian arts tradition.

is a Redondo Beach landmark. Formerly a 19th-century lumber mill and a fishery, the studio opened in 1990 to showcase Redondo Beach's Bohemian art scene.

Though one of the founders, Paul Orvalla, died in 2000, the other, Richard Stephens, still lives in the South Bay and carries on the Cannery Row tradition.

In a recent interview with Jackie Balestra of South Bay by Jackie, he said the art scene in Redondo Beach is "improving."

"Used to be when you opened the calendar section of the Easy Reader, there would be a whole page of music listings and only one art show or event," he told Balestra. "Now, there are more listings for art than music."

Stephens also said the Redondo Beach Art Group's recent event was "good."

The gallery just finished hosting a show by Wilfred Sarr. Its next show, which opens Friday and runs through Nov. 18, features the Mayan-inspired artwork of Carlotta Giangualano.
