Redondo Beach resident Justin Hopkins took the stage Monday night on NBC's hit reality show The Voice, singing a version of David Gray's "Babylon" and earning himself a spot on the team of Cee Lo Green.
"There was no one I would have rather worked with on this show, PERIOD!" wrote Hopkins, 31, on his official blog for the show. "I would have enjoyed Blake's twitter support, Adam's modern approach, but there is nobody on that panel with more experience (than) the LO'."
The Voice sets itself apart from other singing reality shows like American Idol through its blind audition process.
During the blind auditions, musicians sing for the four judges, hoping that either Green, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine or Blake Shelton will pick them for his or her team. The catch? The coach can't see what the singers look like until he or she picks them for the team. If more than one coach wants a singer, the singer gets to choose which team he or she wants to be on.
After the teams are set, the coaches work with their singers to develop their talent. During the battle phase and the live audience phases, the teams are whittled down until one finalist is named "The Voice."
The grand prize winner receives a recording contract.
Hopkins, who plans to perform at Cafe Boogaloo in Hermosa Beach on Tuesday at 7 p.m., is an avid surfer and golfer, according to his brief biography on the show's official website. He plays piano, guitar, bass and drums.
His father, Dave Hopkins, told The Oregonian that his son began singing in elementary school, and when he was 6 years old, he was picking out tunes on the piano that he heard on the radio.
The final episode of blind auditions is set to air next Monday. After that, The Voice will proceed to the battle rounds.
