'Baked Donuts' Has Half the Guilt

Beach City Baked Donuts provides this tasty pastry without the guilt.

I admit that when I've driven past in the past, I've always thought it was closed; however, it's been here for a few years now, so it must be something right. I finally drove by when they were open and decided to give it a try.

It's a narrow little shop that was very clean. I liked their chalkboard menus, which provide a low-key vibe. The store prides itself on using natural ingredients with no preservatives.

The pastry case only showed five little doughnuts. I thought that's all they had left until I had a look at the back counter and saw there were plenty more in stock.

They had honey drip, coco, apricot and cinnamon sugar doughnuts. I decided to play it safe and get a cinnamon sugar ($1.25). I figured I'd try the more exotic flavors another time.

The doughnuts come individually, by the half-dozen and by the dozen. They can also be served affogato with vanilla ice cream and espresso, chocolate or caramel affogato poured over the top. I'll have to sample those another time—the description alone sounds appetizing.

The service was very quick, and the staff did seem genuinely friendly with big smiles on their faces. At first, I was a little taken aback when the doughnuts looked like they were prepackaged. It wasn't until I got them out of the bag that I saw the store packaged them. The packaging makes the treats more travel friendly.

The doughnut had more of a sponge cake texture. I could taste some of the egg yolk, but not too much. Thankfully, the cinnamon sugar flavor was definitely more present than the egg.

Though $1.25 isn't exactly super expensive, it is a small doughnut for the price. The taste is also acquired. If you expect a traditional doughnut, you will be disappointed. You'll be fine if you come in expecting something different.

The hours are a bit strange, so be sure to check out their website for more information.

Beach City Baked Donuts is located at 501 N. Pacific Coast Hwy. in South Redondo Beach.
