Members Angry Over Sudden Closure of Fitness Evolution

Fitness Evolution Redondo Beach, which was in bankruptcy, closed last week.

Fitness Evolution, a gym on Harbor Drive in South Redondo Beach, suddenly shut down last week without notice, according to media reports.

A sign on the door dated Dec. 4 noted that the gym is "temporarily closed."

According to the Daily Breeze, a trustee appointed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court closed the Redondo Beach branch of the gym Tuesday due to outstanding debts and lack of profits. The gym had been under the control of a trustee because owners Ruth and Abram Tavera of Muscle Improvement Inc. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

"What happened to my money? What happened to all the people's money?" gym member Jack Levy asked CBS Los Angeles. "Last week, they had me renew for another year … and now, a week later, they shut down?"

Disgruntled members have started a Facebook page called Victims of Fitness Evolution, where they're sharing tips on how to get their money back if they prepaid. Other gyms are also starting to offer deals to Fitness Evolution members.

Fitness Evolution corporate officer Steve Tavera, whose parents own the gym, would not comment to CBS Los Angeles about whether members would receive refunds.

"We did not shut it down," he said. "The U.S. Trustees shut it down. We are working to try to see what can be done to reopen."

The gym, formerly a Gold's Gym, became a Fitness Evolution gym last year.
