Celebrate National Donut Day in Redondo Beach

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June.

Friday is National Donut Day, an event created way back in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

The holiday is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June.

The big doughnut chains—Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts, to be exact—are commemorating the day by handing out free treats; alas, neither chain has franchises in Redondo Beach. The closest Krispy Kreme is in Gardena at 1199 W. Artesia Blvd., and the only Dunkin' Donuts in California is on the Camp Pendleton Marine base.

Nevertheless, there are still several places in Redondo Beach where you can get your doughnut fix.

Mar Yvette, a lifestyle reporter who appears weekdays on Fox 11, recommended Beach City Baked Donuts in her roundup of the best doughnut shops in the Los Angeles area.

"BCB is the country's first baked donut shop, making it a place where you can indulge with almost no guilt … and no brick-stuck-in-the-stomach feeling," she writes. "This place uses organic ingredients and offers a daily-changing menu of flavors like Earl Gray, Lemon Bean, Banana Man, Rum Raisin, Japanese Sweet Potato and Uji-Kin."

Beach City Baked Donuts is located at 501. N. Pacific Coast Hwy. in South Redondo Beach. It's hours vary, so it might be best to call 310-303-3159 first to see if it's open.
