Find Good Value at Las Brisas

Las Brisas, a Redondo Beach staple, offers up cactus soup and other Mexican fare.

is one of the few Mexican restaurants in Redondo Beach that has graced the town for many years. It occupies a moderate, cozy space on Artesia Boulevard with a small parking lot behind it.

Inside, the staff recognized and greeted locals as they entered—this clearly was a neighborhood joint. First-timers were treated fairly as well. The restaurant was practically empty during this early dinner.

The menu contained many Mexican specialties, including carne asada, carnitas, fajitas, and of course, the popular chimichangas, burritos and tacos.

The obligatory chips and salsa started the meal off. The chips were warm but not the least bit salty. Just a dash of salt would have made them a bit more appealing. The two salsas served with the chips could satisfy all their diners—one salsa was very spicy, and the other was mild.

The cactus soup, which was included in the price of the entrée, is a soup that is rarely seen on menus at Mexican restaurants. It was was very satisfying, and the cilantro and tomatillos were a good balance with the cactus.

Up next were the Carnitas Super Ricas ($8.95) served with chunks of pork, pico de gallo, beans, rice and a choice of corn or flour tortillas. The pork was not over-seasoned. The flavor was subtle, and the meat was tender. There were enough beans and rice to eat at the time and take home for later. Fortunately, the meal was not overly filling, either; it was just a good balance.

Las Brisas is a good place for a simple, affordable Mexican dinner. The service was friendly and quick. Nevertheless, the jury is still out on whether it's the best Mexican restaurant in Redondo Beach.
