Hawthorne Boulevard Gets Makeover

With the opening of new stores in Torrance and Redondo Beach, Hawthorne Boulevard is once again becoming the place to shop.

As the city prepares to revitalize its waterfront, Hawthorne Boulevard has been undergoing a revitalization of its own, the Daily Breeze reported over the weekend.

The street—otherwise known as County Route N7 or State Route 107—is the main commercial artery that begins at the Palos Verdes Peninsula and runs through Torrance, Redondo Beach, Lawndale and Hawthorne in the South Bay.

Over the past year or so, Redondo Beach has seen its share of grand openings along its main stretch of Hawthorne Boulevard, which represents North Redondo Beach's eastern border with Torrance until Redondo Beach Boulevard.

These openings include a new and a larger at the , as well as , , , , , , , and other businesses in the South Bay Marketplace just south of the Galleria.

"The Galleria continues to improve and attract and have a good tenant mix," Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin told the Daily Breeze. "At the same time, South Bay Marketplace came along ... and it really created an excellent relationship and draw."

Right across the street in Torrance, a Chick-fil-A opened within the last year, and near 190th Street, on the Torrance side of Hawthorne Boulevard, an Orchard Supply Hardware opened its doors at the end of August.

The community, too, seems excited about the new stores. The OSH grand opening event drew a large crowd, as did the grand openings of , and .

It's nice to see these new stores, but I wish the city would update the roadways, some of which are in absolutely deplorable condition. The intersection of Hawthorne Blvd. and 190th Street immediately comes to mind, as does the roller-coaster like section of Skypark Drive between Hawthorne Blvd. and Madison Street.
