Honda Pumps Free Gas in Beach Cities

Is it ever too early for free gasoline?

Perhaps it was the early hour, but only 15 drivers took advantage of free gasoline from Honda's "Helpful Guys in Blue" on Thursday morning.

About a half-dozen employees of SoCal Honda Dealers, as well as a big blue tanker truck, showed up at the South Bay Shell and Car Wash at the intersection of Aviation and Artesia boulevards on the Redondo Beach-Hermosa Beach border.

The exact location of the promotion was not disclosed in advance; instead, the SoCal Honda Dealers offered hints on Twitter and Facebook.

"People like a treasure hunt," said Steve Judkins, the Helpful Guy in charge.

When Honda drivers showed up at the gas station, Judkins and his team would wave enthusiastically to get the motorist's attention, then pump the gasoline and clean the front windshield.

He admitted that the first stop of the morning is usually the slowest, possibly due to the early hour—6:30 a.m., in this case.

He expected more people to show up at the next two stops in Hawthorne and Marina del Rey.

"One time, we had about 300 people lined up," Judkins said.
