How to Look Good, Feel Comfortable for Special Occasions

Papillon's owner offers tips for choosing special event clothing.

The key to dressing for special occasions is finding a low-maintenance ensemble that will make you look and feel good through the whole event.

Papillon carries a broad range of clothes that do just that. I recently stopped by the small Riviera Village boutique, where I learned from owner Krushenka Finocchiaro that this is all very much by design. She tells us about the key factors she considers when selecting garments for special formal occasions.

Care and upkeep: Do you find chauffeuring items to the dry cleaner between wearings to be an enormous waste of time? Finocchiaro selects garments that can be taken care of at home, either by hand or in the washing machine.

Fabric and materials: The boutique carries a potent fuchsia number that can be balled up in a oversized purse, if needed, and unfurled hours later in perfectly wearable condition. Clingy knits and polyester with little to no surface decoration, such as lace and beading, are ideal when you're on the road since they look smart and travel well.

Place and location: If in doubt, wear something elegant and simple rather than something elaborate to reduce the risk of looking too overdone.

Comfort and ease: When trying on a garment, don't confine yourself to the dressing room. Walk around and see how it feels when you move. Jitterbug if you must. Make sure you feel completely comfortable before you commit. The success of your event depends upon it.
