Northrop Grumman Gets $427M Contract

Work on the Defense Weather Satellite System will be completed in Redondo Beach, the Pentagon says.

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Redondo Beach-based a $427.9 million contract for the U.S. Air Force, according to a news release from the company.

The company will work to establish a Defense Weather Satellite System "baseline" using modifications from the National Polar Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System, Reuters reported. In February 2010, the White House said the NPOOESS, which is a joint civilian-military weather satellite program, is to be phased out.

According to Northrop Grumman, the DWSS "will provide enhanced weather information critical to battlefield operations" more quickly than systems already in place.
