A peanut butter recall that began at Trader Joe's this weekend was expanded Monday to more than 100 peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter and Tahini and roasted blanched peanut products made by Sunland Inc.'s Portales, N.M. plant.
The voluntary recall was initiated after reports of 30 people infected between June 11 and Sept. 2 with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney from 19 states—including two cases in California—possibly linked to the peanut and almond butter surfaced, according to news releases from the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Four people have been hospitalized in connection with the illness; however, no fatalities have been reported.
"There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers," said Sunland President and CEO Jimmie Shearer in a news release. "As a precautionary step, we have decided to voluntarily recall our Almond Peanut and Cashew Butters, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and Sept. 24, 2012. If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Please return the product to your supermarket for a full refund or dispose of it."
The recalled products include house brands from Trader Joe's, Sprouts Farmers Market and Fresh & Easy grocery stores. The affected products were manufactured between May 1 and Sept. 24 and has best-by dates falling between May 1, 2013, and Sept. 24, 2013. "FDA’s top priority is protecting consumers and ensuring the safety of our food supply. We are engaged on this case and working closely with the CDC and state health departments around the country. As we examine the information from the state investigations, we will make decisions on our next steps and keep the public informed," the agency said in a statement on its website.
The potential salmonella contamination could cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly or others with compromised immune systems. Healthy persons who get infected with salmonella experience fever, abdominal pain, vomiting and a most unpleasant distress of the lower intestinal system.
