Spice It up at Ocean Tava

Stuck in the sandwich rut? Spice up your week with some Indian food.

In my reviews, I try to cover a range of different cuisines in Redondo Beach, but let's face it—some cuisines remain more popular than most. While we do have a nice mix of different types of food, sometimes you have to keep digging to find a rarity.

This was my experience with Indian food. I wanted to try something new, but there weren't many Indian restaurants to choose from. I settled on , which is located on the second floor of a small plaza on PCH.

Indian food can be a little on the pricey side, but at Ocean Tava, specially priced items can be found between the hours of 11:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., as well as 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted with a pleasant "Namaste" from the staff. We were the first table of the dinner shift at 6 p.m.; more diners came in towards the end of the meal. We started off with a Vegetable Samosa—a puff pastry encased with cumin spiced potatoes. It was a nice start.

The service was akin to a flow yoga class: it was pleasant but also slow moving. It was more relaxed than painfully slow—the type that involves constant glances at the wrist watch—but nowhere near the hurried pace you see at other restaurants.

After we cleaned our appetizer plates, the main course arrived. I ordered the Bengan Bhana, a vegetarian dish of baked eggplant with sauteed ginger onions and tomatoes with spices served with rice. This dish is one of many that breaks the stereotype of vegetarian food that leaves one still hungry. As a matter of fact, as tasty as the dish was, it filled me up. I took the leftovers home.

The meal was so filling that we passed on dessert. Nevertheless, I'm glad to find a spot in town for something quite different from the standard sandwich, pizza, seafood and sushi places that Redondo has to offer. As tasty as those are, once in a while it's good to try something new.
