Tucked inside , the is a take-out window that serves some of the best burgers in Redondo Beach—and it may be looking at expanding, according to a brief mention in a review on the LA Weekly's Squid Ink blog.
Writer Linda Burum—who describes the eatery as a "miniscule, seatless deli, opened on a shoestring by young chef Lowell Bakke … shoehorned into a space the size of a walk-in closet at the back of his family's business"—says that the operators of the year-old Standing Room are "in the market for an actual restaurant space."
Right now, the Standing Room is, well, standing-room only. Customers eat their food on the bus bench outside or on plastic milk crates behind the store, according to Burum.
The deli's Hawaiian-inspired cuisine, gourmet burgers and Parmesan-truffled fries have impressed Redondo Beach Patch readers. In fact, the Standing Room very narrowly lost the in Redondo Beach.
"Where can you find Thai crab mayo? Short rib on a burger topped with bacon and fried egg? Fries with Furikake? A soft shell crab sandwich?!" asked commenter Felicia Lopez during the competition. "These are only a few of the many reasons why I love the Standing Room."
