It's been a crazy year. Redondo Beach Patch writers were busy writing about homicides, television episodes and dancing firefighters, among other topics. Here is the No. 1 story of the year, chosen by popularity and editorial discretion.
'Bar Rescue' Can't Save Breakwall (No. 1)
Last year, Redondo Beach Patch ran a story entitled, "Did 'Bar Rescue' Save Breakwall?"
In a word—no. Breakwall Bar and Grill, formerly known as Kilkenny's Irish Pub, closed at the beginning of 2012 due to financial difficulties.
The eatery received national attention after Bar Rescue, a reality television show on Spike TV featuring host Jon Taffer as he revamps failing bars, featured it in its "Beach Bummer" episode.
The show cast then-manager Carlos Gable as the villain—someone who seemed to sabotage the new menu and who refused to follow Taffer's instructions. After the episode aired, a question was on everyone's minds: Was Carlos fired?
We're not sure; however, he appeared to have lost his status as co-owner. When the owners applied to renew their liquor license for 2012, his name was not listed on the application.
Nevertheless, it's now a moot point. In 2013, Barney's Beanery will open where Breakwall once was.
