Unemployment Rate Dips Slightly

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Los Angeles County drops 0.1 percent between August and September.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County dropped to 12.4 percent in September, down from a revised 12.5 percent in August, the state Employment Development Department announced Friday.

The 12.4 percent unemployment rate was below the 12.9 percent rate in September 2010, according to the EDD.

California's jobless rate was 11.9 percent in September, down from 12.1 percent in August and below the rate in September 2010, when the rate was 12.5 percent, according to the EDD.

The comparable estimates for the nation were 9.1 percent in September, 9.1 percent in August and 9.6 percent a year ago.

In August of this year, Redondo Beach's unemployment rate fell from 7.1 percent in July to 6.8 percent, according to preliminary numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That number is also lower than the 7.1 percent unemployment rate for August 2011.

Redondo Beach-specific numbers for the month of September won't be released until Nov. 2.

Total nonfarm employment increased by 39,200 jobs in Los Angeles County between August and September to reach 3.8 million. The largest jump was in the educational and health services sectors, which posted a gain of 17,200 jobs.

A total of 602,000 people were unemployed in September in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of about 4.85 million.

Statewide, 2.152 million people were out of work, down slightly from the previous month.
