The shallow temblor struck Beverly Hills shortly after midnight Friday. Did you feel it?

Editor's note: This article was last updated at 4:30 p.m. Friday to clarify that the earthquake occurred early Friday morning.

LOS ANGELES—A magnitude-3.5 earthquake struck Beverly Hills on Friday shortly after midnight, shaking much of the Los Angeles area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor's epicenter in Beverly Hills was only two miles west-southwest of West Hollywood, three miles north of Culver City and four miles west-southwest of Hollywood.

Lt. Lincoln Hoshino of the Beverly Hills Police Department told City News Service that the department had received no reports of injuries or damage from the earthquake.

"We felt a pretty good jolt here," Hoshino said.

Following department protocol, Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters on the ground and in helicopters checked for damage to infrastructure; however, no injuries, deaths or damage was reported, according Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department also received no reports of injuries or damage, a dispatcher said.

By 1:30 a.m., more than 4,000 people in more than 150 ZIP codes reported feeling the shaking, according to the USGS Community Internet Intensity Map. People reported feeling the quake as far south as Costa Mesa and as far north as Valencia.

The earthquake struck less than half a mile beneath the earth's surface, according to USGS data. Beverly Hills is located on the West Beverly Hills Lineament fault, an extension of the Newport-Inglewood Fault System; however, it's not yet clear whether Friday's quake on the faultline.

This is the second earthquake to strike Beverly Hills in less than a week. On Monday, a , waking people up across the county.

East Culver City here. The one before this was a sharp, sudden jolt—this one was more of a swaying motion, and harder.

was just about to doze off when I felt the bed jiggle and heard dresser creaking. I've lived here a year and this is the first one I actually felt. It was small and fun but I guess I was amped up because I was awake for another hour!

Not sure what a earthquake feels like ( will find out once I'm moved) but I can tell you hurricanes are no fun. Rain, wind, power out for days.
Paul September 7, 2012 at 03:03 pm
I have been so frightened by this earthquakes! VERY difficult to sleep not knowing when the BIG one is going to come.
George Reese September 7, 2012 at 03:06 pm
I am watching my neighbors kitty and he looked up at the ceiling just before it hit and jumped from the bed. I wonder if he sensed it prior to it hitting? Very strong jolt in east side of West Hollywood.

I have survived through more adversity than most and have so much I want/need to do. I would appreciate another 55 years to do fulfill opportunities. My grandma has lived a thriving and active 102 years, I want her to easily make it through any earthquake that occurs in her future.

Hey Paul, if you get organized and set up your supply kit then you know you are ready and maybe that will bring you some comfort. Also knowledge is power, go to the usgs.com website and read up on some of their stuff that might help to.. you're in my prayers. God Bless

DITTO! that's what I was thinking too! Don't worry everyone-Los Angeles is not going anywhere!(not even into the ocean like some would have u believe!)lol! I've been through all the big ones since 1983,and la is still standing-there is way too much money here for it to collapse!

A couple miles away, my pets woke up and were agitated, but I wasn't sure what from. We were all sleeping on the second floor.
Guess I'm a deep sleeper, or I am used to my three animals moving around so I don't notice movement so much.

Was it (former) President Bush or President Obama's 'fault'? lol (Seriously, I hope everyone is ok.)

Anyone remember the Sylmar quake? February 9, 1971 That was my first. I was staying at a mobile home park in Van Nuys when it hit, only five miles from the epicenter. Only three trailers remained on thier foundation. This was a scary one

I was asleep! BTW, shouldn't the subtitle read: after midnight on Thursday?
George Vreeland Hill September 7, 2012 at 06:11 pm
I felt it.
It only lasted a couple of seconds, but I got out of bed real quick. I cut my finger on something in the dark so there was an injury.
Tensie Palmer September 7, 2012 at 06:17 pm
Wow! You remember the date of the Sylmar quake? I was in high school then. That one was so long! Scared my whole family. My poor Mom had 4 teens and 2 dogs riding it out in her bed. I felt quakes before Sylmar, but none as strong as that one up to that point.

The article says "shortly after MIDNIGHT Friday" wouldn't that be Saturday a.m.? If the earthquake hit TODAY (which IS Friday) wouldn't the earthquake have hit "shortly after MIDNIGHT Thursday, which would be FRIDAY, since Friday starts at the stroke of 12:01 a.m.

Paul, We're on a blind rock hurtling through space. Physical safety is not really achievable, and, in the end, not desirable. Worry less and enjoy your time here. It's not the length of your life that matters, but the quality.

The earthquake struck at about 12:03 a.m. Friday, which started at 12:00:01 a.m.

Please fill out he US Geological Survey's "Did You Feel It?" form. It is critical to gauge intensity (as opposed to magnitude). Complete it even if you didn't feel the quake:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci15211897#dyfi_form The science behind the survey is explained here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/research/dyfi/ The shake map for last night's quake is here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci15211897#shakemap And spare a thought for the 64 killed in China in their quakes yesterday: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/08/world/asia/earthquakes-shake-southwest-china.html Check out the USGS Real Time Earthquake Map for all quakes over 2.5 for the last seven days worldwide to see how ours compares. (Costa Rica had a 7.5 his week.) http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/

I remember reading about it (I was in London where I live sometimes...we get quakes there too, believe it or not). My cousin got his arm broken by a filing cabinet in the Sylmar quake.

"Angelinos"? I always spell it Angelenos.
diana davies September 7, 2012 at 07:20 pm
The only death in the 7.6 Coasta Rican quake his week was from fright. There's a lesson in that for you. Instead of being scared, be grateful for the full LA experience. Enjoy your stay.

I was walking around the house - in our long, central hallway, getting ready for bed.
I didn't actually FEEL the quake, but I heard something rattling outside. I hoped it was not that family of raccoons messing-around the trash cans again. I guessed that it was just some noise coming from inside our neighbors house. My Wife thought it was a small earthquake. See ? "Always listen to your Wife."
Ali September 7, 2012 at 10:11 pm
You can't think about that. Earthquakes are a part of life in California. Don't be afraid. Learn all you can about them, be prepared, but don't let fear rule your life. If you can't get past it, then you are living in the wrong place.

i felt this one as a 1 second burst. i thought maybe somebody slammed a door really hard, but it would have had to have been a really big door... the whole building shook for 1 second
Lynn Gidlow September 9, 2012 at 12:00 pm
I have this theory - big ones happen in So CA every 20 years or so. The first one I remember was 1952 (Tehachapi), then came 1971 (Sylmar) then came the big one in 1994. BTW - the big one prior to 1952 was 1933 in Long Beach. So if the last one was 1994, and this is 2012 - you do the math!

If only I lived in Beverly Hills, I just know I would have felt it ! I Love Los Angeles, shake rattle and roll !
bonnie wolfe September 11, 2012 at 01:28 pm
TENSLE I only remember the date by my son's age. He turned two months old on 'Feb 10th, the date following the quake. I was 19 and had gone out to visit a girlfriend for the night. Can you imagine the shaking in a single wide mobile home? Whoa. it was impossible to walk. When I returned home I found that a seven foot high oak book shelf filled with books and framed photographs had tumbled over crushing the basinette my baby would have been sleeping in along with a wall of small window panes that blew out . The room was covered in broken glass. I just had a visual - your Mom, 4 teens and two dogs "riding it out" together. Funny now but it sure wasn't then :)
