Earth Hour - Light Up Your Future

Where Will You Be For Earth Hour?

The City of Manhattan Beach and the South Bay 350 Climate Action Group invite you to join in turning off all non-essential lights in your home and/or business and meet us on the Manhattan Beach Pier at 7:30 PM for a very special Earth Hour event. The iconic Manhattan Beach Pier will go dark, and attendees will be given an LED candle to help relight the Pier for an inspirational photo in honor of Earth Hour. Come and be part of this historic moment! More details below or on the Earth Hour: Light Up Your Future Facebook page.

What is Earth Hour?

The Earth Hour movement inspires people to join in the world’s largest global climate action initiative to raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation and climate change issues. Earth Hour takes place each year at the end of March from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, and is a global event led by the World Wildlife Fund.

After beginning in 2007 in a single city — Sydney, Australia — Earth Hour has exploded into a worldwide movement. Landmarks around the world, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, and the Manhattan Beach Pier, all going dark as symbols of climate action.

For the past six years, the City of Manhattan Beach has been a strong supporter of Earth Hour. Each year, the historic Manhattan Beach Pier goes dark for one hour to show support for this climate awareness movement. In 2013, the City added Polliwog Park, an 18-acre facility, to the event to make an even larger visual impact of the City's commitment to energy conservation in support for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour 2014: Light Up Your Future

This year's special Earth Hour event will feature live music from Pihemanu at 7:30 PM, followed by remarks from Mayor Howorth as the community gathers to watch the Pier lights switch off. Please join the City of Manhattan Beach in celebrating this movement by turning off your lights and joining us at the Pier. Several local businesses will be participating and offering incentives to Earth Hour attendees. And each participant will receive an LED candle to help light the Pier at 8:30 PM when the lights go off in honor of Earth Hour. A free bike corral will be managed by Hermosa Cyclery, so please plan to walk or ride your bike to the Pier.
