Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for April 17, 2014

Easter and Passover Week has begun and if you haven’t already bought fresh eggs, you’d best get to the store soon – as of yesterday afternoon, I could only find brown eggs…..which might make for some interesting (muted) hues.

Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach hosts a monthly Wine Academy on the third Thursday of each month. Wine loving friends can gather to socialize, taste and learn from experts about new wines in a relaxed, fun, atmosphere. This popular event is open to the public and runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and offers wine lovers an opportunity to enjoy an intimate, casual, wine-centric social gathering. This month’s Academy will feature Cru Winery with wine maker, Ken Post. Well-priced at $25 per person in advance, $35 at the door, the Wine Academy features expert, interactive presentations of exceptional wines, boutique and/or limited production wines, along with tantalizing wine-paired hors d’oeuvres prepared by Executive Chef Chris Garasic. Vroom, vroom! Cruise at the Beach is back at Ruby’s Diner in Redondo! Open to the public, this free event happens every Friday night through October and features a gathering of vintage automobiles on display in the Ruby’s Diner parking lot from 4 to 8 p.m. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their hot rods, street rods and muscle cars and strut their stuff. A favorite with local car enthusiasts, this popular event has grown tremendously over the years and features vintage and classic cars from all over Southern California. The evening also features music, trivia, trophies and raffle. Ruby’s Diner is located at 245 North Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. The Western Museum of Flight presents an Aerospace Make & Take Session on Saturday, April 19 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The event, presented in cooperation with Pacific Coast Hobbies, features rocket, space shuttle and jet fighter building kits for adults and children five years and older. Guests are invited to build as many models as they like. Kits are $12 and $14 each. The staff of Pacific Coast Hobbies will be on hand to assist with building and answer technical questions. PLAY @ ESMoA every Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. Start your Saturday with PLAY @ ESMoA, an early childhood program designed for 3 and 4 year olds and their favorite adult companion. PLAY @ ESMoA will introduce the youngest visitor to art through age-appropriate short stories, gallery play activities and an art activity. These workshops last one hour and are led by ESMoA Education Specialists. Admission is free but attendees must pre-register at rsvp@esmoa.org. PLAY @ ESMoA classes are limited to 10 children. One adult chaperone is required for every two children. Siblings of all ages are welcome. Pre-registration is required. Terranea Resort invites the South Bay community to go green during the resort’s annual Earth Week activities from April 21 through April 25. Looking at abstract art can be fun and rewarding, but it can also be a challenge. El Segundo Museum of Art presents Artist Talk Paint and Print: Contemporary Abstraction, a primer on viewing abstract art on Saturday, April 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. Join Roy Dowell, Founder of OTIS Graduate Fine Arts and Jim Reid, Master Printer Gemini G.E.L. for a guided artist talk about the works on view in Experience 09: SILENCE. Dowell is a renowned abstract artist and Reid printed some of the most fascinating works on view, including two by Ellsworth Kelly and one by Richard Serra. This will be a one-of-a-kind chance to hear directly from two key players in the world of contemporary abstraction. As always, admission is free. Join Beach Cities Health District for a free fitness series, Yoga at the Pier, every Monday evening from April 21 to May 19. The weekly event will take place south of the Manhattan Beach Pier at the Strand. Get moving and de-stress with this free, public event that brings together the community, fitness and fun! Everyone is welcome to participate — women, men and children — and you can participate at your own pace. Registration starts at 6 p.m. with the hour long yoga class beginning at 6:30. All participants must sign a waiver. Attendees should bring their own yoga mat. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, athletic clothing and bring a jacket in case of cool weather. Classes will be led by certified instructors from the Center for Health & Fitness and AdventurePlex.
