Yesterday, Tarsan SUP was going to begin offering Complimentary Paddle-Outs but due to high winds and a small craft advisory, it was cancelled. So, starting next week, every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. guests are invited to demo Tarsan’s line of Laird boards free of charge. This is not a class – it’s an opportunity to get your feet wet (pun intended) trying out this popular activity. Attendees must reserve a board prior to the event each week. The 2014 Universe Multicultural Film Festival (UMFF) takes place from April 4 to April 6 in Rolling Hills Estates and will feature films from over twenty countries. The screenings will be held at the Promenade on the Peninsula, RHCC Community Center and Peninsula Center Library in Rolling Hills Estates. The UMFF will present a wide variety of films including original shorts, documentaries and animations created by select filmmakers from all over the world. This festival offers an amazing opportunity to learn about different cultures, lifestyles, traditions and beliefs. General admission tickets are $5 for children 18 and under and $10 for adults. The 2014 Surfer’s Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Saturday, April 5 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Surfing is a large part of Hermosa’s heritage and to honor the strong surfing history, the city annually recognizes Hermosa’s surfing legends with the Surfer’s Walk of Fame, located on the Hermosa Beach Pier. The City of Hermosa Beach will commemorate the surf heritage of the South Bay with the induction of two legendary South Bay surfers, John McFarlane and Sparky Hudson. Inducted surfers are acknowledged by the placement of their name engraved on bronze plaques embedded along the pier. Spyder Surf Fest 2014 will once again bring together the surf industry’s most prominent brands and surfers to Hermosa Beach on Saturday, April 5 for a seventh consecutive year. The day will kick off with the Surfers Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by a day of live music, fashion shows, interactive booths, giveaways and new to this year’s Surf Fest line-up – the LA Surf Awards, which will be presented at 3 p.m. at Hermosa Pier Plaza. Pier Plaza will also feature industry booths and musical acts, including 70′s Amateur World Champion Mark Levy’s band THE BIXBY DICKS, Fallen Riviera, HOIST the COLORS and local favorites, Kevin Sousa and Sand Section. Participating brands include presenting sponsor Monster Energy, Sanuk, SUN BUM, Hurley, Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Electric, Rip Curl, Roxy, Toms and many more. After 7 p.m., festivities will continue into the evening at the official Surf Fest Post Party at Waterman’s. VIP wristbands will be issued during the day at the restaurant for express entry and food and beverage discounts. Shade Hotel hosts the ninth annual Ultimate Wine Festival Sunday, April 6. The festival showcases California’s premier wineries and winemakers in an intimate and enjoyable setting for wine loving guests and winery participants alike. This year, more than 50 notable wineries will present their latest vintages. The evening includes appetizer stations and elegant tray-passed hors d’oeuvres to savor with your choice of wines. The Strand House presents the next event of the Culinary Masters Series on Monday, April 7 featuring Chef John Sedlar of Riviera Restaurant. Over three decades ago, Chef Sedlar’s Saint Estèphe restaurant in Manhattan Beach became the birthplace of Modern Southwest Cuisine. This bold and creative new style of cooking quickly won acclaim in Los Angeles, across the U.S. and around the world. Each course will be paired with wines from Mumm Napa, Trefethen Family Winery, Ceja Vineyards, Comstock Wines, Faust by Huneeus Vinters and Robert Mondavi Vineyards. In attendance will be winemakers and winery associates to comment on each pour.
