Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for August 1, 2013

This Sunday marks the first of the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert series! This event is always a ton of fun – last year, my friends and I attended all four shows and had a rockin’ good time! It’s always a crush, so if crowds aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other fabulous area concerts: the Redondo Pier (Thursdays & Saturdays), Malaga Cove (Wednesdays), Polliwog Park (Sundays) and Nelson’s (Fridays & Saturdays).

The 2013 International Surf Festival began yesterday and will run through Sunday, August 4. The festival kicked off with the Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament - better known as 6-man! - on Wednesday and finishes up today, Thursday, August 1, at the Manhattan Beach pier. The weekend will be packed with events and includes surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest, beach volleyball and several other activities. The International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. For additional information and schedule, visit the website at http://www.surffestival.org/.

The El Segundo Rotary Club presents Movie in the Park on Saturday, August 3 at 4 p.m. The featured film, Rise of the Guardians, tells the story of how the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth and the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world. Additional activities include train rides, a moon bounce and face painting. Refreshments will also be available. Please bring your own blankets and chairs but leave the pets at home. Drop offs are not permitted! Admission is $4 per person (children under 2 years of age are free) and parking is included. Tickets are available for sale at the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce. Chevron Park is located at the corner of El Segundo and Sepulveda Boulevards. For tickets and information visit the website at http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?accountid=2516.

This Sunday, August 4, is the final production of the summer. Catch All’s Well That Ends Well at Hess Park located at 29301 Hawthorne Boulevard in Rancho Palos Verdes. The show begins at 7 p.m. Grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. The 30th Annual National Night Out takes place this year on Tuesday, August 6. This unique crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. This annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness by generating support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs, strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and sending a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program. The benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.
