Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for August 15

The South Bay’s four local Patch.com pages need your support! In an effort to make the news unit profitable, AOL announced last week it will close or find partners for 400 Patch sites. The South Bay has embraced the hyper-local websites which currently serve the communities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Redondo Beach. Local Patch Editors Nicole Mooradian, Liz Spear and John Schreiber have done an amazing job covering their respective neighborhoods. They post local news as it happens, promote neighborhood businesses and organizations, provide a friendly forum for the community to share all manner of information and they’ve kept us very well-informed with regard to hot button issues such as the AES Power Plant and proposed oil drilling in Hermosa. I’d like to encourage everyone that has ever used the Patch sites to send Liz, Nicole and John supportive emails saying why you think Patch should continue to serve our communities. I have no idea if it will help, but it certainly couldn't hurt. [Editor's note: Nicole Mooradian can be reached at nicole.mooradian@patch.com; Liz Spear at liz.spear@patch.com; and John Schreiber at john.schreiber@patch.com.]

The City of Redondo Beach hosts Summer Family Films under the Stars throughout the month of August. Every Friday evening, Alta Vista Park will be transformed into an outdoor theater for screenings of family-friendly movies. This Friday, August 16 features a screening of Anna Karenina. The movie starts at dusk. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and whatever you do, don’t forget the popcorn! These screenings are very popular so you’ll want to arrive early to claim a prime viewing location. Alta Vista Park is located at 715 Julia Street in Redondo Beach.  For additional information, visit the website at http://www.sopdigitaledition.com/cityofredondo/.

The Redondo Beach Pier Association presents the 11th Annual Chalk Art Festival on Saturday, August 17 from noon to 4 p.m. Aspiring and experienced artists are invited to participate in this colorful event intended to transform the Pier into a canvas over the water. All ages are welcome, there is no fee to register and free chalk will be given away to the first 150 registrants. Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories. Make a note: artists must register online prior to the festival. This free event is open to public viewing so even if you don’t plan to participate, take a stroll along the pier and see for yourself what these amazing artists can create with a slab of concrete and a little chalk! The Redondo Beach Pier is located at 100 Fisherman’s Wharf in Redondo Beach. For more information, visit the website at http://www.redondopier.com/.
