Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for January 23, 2014

The surf forecast calls for some big waves on west-facing beaches over the next couple of days. Surfline is calling for 6 to 8 foot waves, probably double overhead at the best spots. If you plan on being in the water, think twice and take precautions - it’s going to get a little wild out there! I’m going to stop by Breakwall on Friday and check it out.

dineLA Restaurant Week is a bi-annual dining event established to introduce diners to the extensive assortment of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County. dineLA Winter Restaurant Week takes place over 12 consecutive days and runs from January 20 through January 31. Local foodies and visitors to the area will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of specially priced prix fixe menus from some of LA’s best restaurants during this this period. Restaurants from El Segundo to Rancho Palos Verdes will be participating in this culinary event. Some of the restaurants will feature lunch, some will offer dinner and some will present both so be sure to check the website at http://discoverlosangeles.com/restaurantweekv2/. Diners may make a reservation online at Open Table or contact the restaurant directly. Due to the popularity of this event, advance reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are welcome but there is no guarantee they can be accommodated.

The Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center presents the 2014 Los Angeles Guitar Festival on Thursday, January 23. The Los Angeles Guitar Festival is the premier showcase of the hottest guitar talent on the planet! This year’s festival features the incomparable Tommy Emmanuel with special guest Martin Taylor. Ticket prices range from $35 to $55. VIP tickets are $95 and include a ‘Meet & Greet’ with the artists. The Jewish Community Center hosts An Evening with Dennis Prager on Thursday, January 23. Guests are invited to have ‘Dinner with Dennis’ at 6 p.m. followed by the lecture. Prager’s topic for the evening will be “Current Events and Life in America”. There will be a special book signing opportunity and ‘Meet and Greet’ session following the lecture. Tickets for the ‘Dinner with Dennis’ portion of the evening and reserved front row seating are $125 per person. General admission is $25, for students with ID, $10. The Tony award-winning Broadway stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film, The 39 Steps, comes to the Norris Center for the Performing Arts for nine performances, January 24 through February 9. A wildly entertaining experience, the comedic caper follows a man accused of a murder he didn’t commit, as he flees from the authorities and into a string of hair-raising adventures. Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets prices are $40 for adults and $25 for children. If you’ve ever wondered exactly what the Pilates Method is all about, here’s your chance to find out. Hale Pilates Method is offering a FREE introductory class, Pilates: 101, on Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m. The event is designed for attendees to learn about the equipment – particularly the reformer – and get a feel for it. Free StretchBall classes are being offered in Redondo Beach throughout January. StretchBall is the latest technique in non-stretching and relaxation currently being used by the NBA, NFL and NHL, as well as Olympic athletes. It provides the stretch of yoga, the relaxation of massage and reduces tension instantly.
