Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for January 30, 2014

When dineLA ends, Dine MB begins….throw in a Chef’s Cooking Series and a free frozen treat and there’s bound to be an awful lot of great dining happening around the South Bay this weekend!

Today and tomorrow are the last two days of dineLA Restaurant Week, a bi-annual dining event established to introduce diners to the extensive assortment of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County. dineLA Winter Restaurant Week takes place over 12 consecutive days and runs through January 31. Local foodies and visitors to the area will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of specially priced prix fixe menus from some of LA’s best restaurants during this this period. Restaurants from El Segundo to Rancho Palos Verdes will be participating in this culinary event. Some of the restaurants will feature lunch, some will offer dinner and some will present both so be sure to check the website at http://discoverlosangeles.com/restaurantweekv2/. Diners may make reservations online at Open Table or contact the restaurant directly. Due to the popularity of this event, advance reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are welcome but there is no guarantee they can be accommodated.

The Tony award-winning Broadway stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film, The 39 Steps, comes to the Norris Center for the Performing Arts for nine performances, January 24 through February 9. A wildly entertaining experience, the comedic caper follows a man accused of a murder he didn’t commit, as he flees from the authorities and into a string of hair-raising adventures. Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets prices are $40 for adults and $25 for children. The Chef’s Cooking Series at Terranea Resort kicks off the New Year tonight, Thursday, January 30 led by Executive Chef Bernard Ibarra. Guests will experience a three course Coastal Harvest theme menu prepared by the chefs of Terranea. Each course of the Coastal Harvest dinner will be paired with wines from local vineyard Villa Oneiro. Dimitri Bizoumis lives and grows his grapes in neighboring Rolling Hills. The farm-to-table dinner series features an interactive evening with Terranea’s chefs. Each evening, the bi-monthly series begins with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception followed by an interactive chef cooking demonstration and a three-course dinner with wine pairing. Guests will receive recipe cards and special gift items to recreate the experience at home. The Chef’s Cooking Series dinners are limited to 30 guests. The Fifth Annual Fundraiser for the Foundation of Local Arts will take place on February 1 at 7 p.m. at a private residence in Manhattan Beach. Sponsored by Chevron, guests will enjoy an evening soiree in a modern California beach house designed by renowned architect Patrick J. Killian. The event features insightful fireside presentations by this year’s honorees – interior designer Donna Grossman, visiting FOLA artist William Hoblik and architect Patrick Killain. The evening includes live music, a silent auction, door prizes, complimentary cocktail and delicious appetizers. The Norris Center for the Performing Arts presents the 25th Annual Valentine Ball Fundraiser on Saturday, February 1 at Terranea Resort! The theme this year is Music of the Night and for the first time a celebrity guest, Davis Gaines, will be honored. Gaines is L.A.’s longest-running Phantom and the event will feature a tribute to the Phantom of the Opera. It will be an evening filled with show-stopping entertainment – Gaines is scheduled to perform! – fabulous live and silent auction items, dining and dancing. Join more than 9,000 race enthusiasts at the South Bay’s biggest Super Bowl event! Now in its 36th year, the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K Run/Walk & Baby Buggy 10K is a terrific way to celebrate the biggest day in American sports. Enjoy the picturesque sites of Redondo as you make your way along the race route. The ocean breeze, salt air and mild temperatures make for perfect winter running conditions. Participants and guests will also enjoy great food, beverages and a variety of running accessories at the two day Health & Fitness Expo presented by Michelob Ultra located at the Seaside Lagoon. The Expo takes place the day before the race (Feb. 1) and the day of the race (Feb. 2) and is free and open to the public. If that isn’t enough reason to get out of bed, maybe the lure of prizes will persuade you. The costume contest adds a wildly entertaining feature to the festivities and prizes are awarded in several categories. The Peninsula Symphony presents their second concert of the season at Redondo Union High School Auditorium on Sunday, February 2 at 7 p.m. The concert, Mozartian Melodies, directed and conducted by Gary Berkson, will feature musicians Elizabeth Pitcairn on violin and Brett Deubner on viola. The Peninsula Symphony has teamed up with RUHS Band Boosters to support their Music Education classes by providing 100% of concessions to support the growing program of student musicians and dancers. Parking and admission are free. The Redondo Union High School Band and Guard Boosters will provide refreshments at Intermission. The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce presents DINE MB Restaurant Week from February 2 through February 7. DINE MB is part of California Restaurant Month, designated by Visit California. Each participating restaurant will create a pre-fixe menu for participants to choose from. The menu will include an appetizer, entrée and a dessert. Each restaurant’s specific menu will fit into one of the $25, $35 and $45 pricing categories. The menus will feature some new items and favorites off of each restaurants main menu. Yogurtland will celebrate the third annual National Frozen Yogurt Day on Monday, February 3, with FREE yogurt and toppings for all from 4 to 7 p.m. at all participating locations! One last note – I was just informed that the Terranea Shuttle from Riviera Village will only run on the weekends now. The times are the same: 10:30 am, 2:30 pm, 6:30 pm, and 10:30 pm from the shuttle stop in front of the Soil Kiosk at 1799 South Catalina Avenue.
