Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for July 17, 2013

There’s never a shortage of fun and interesting things to do around the South Bay! This weekend, why not try something new and different? Be adventurous! Eat at a different restaurant, discover new wines, participate in a Yogathon or spend some time with a young friend learning about historic aircraft….and don’t forget all the free outdoor concerts!

Restaurant Week is back and it’s time to DineLA! DineLA Restaurant Week is a bi-annual dining event established to introduce diners to the extensive assortment of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County. DineLA Summer Restaurant Week takes place over 12 consecutive days and runs from July 15 through July 26. Local foodies and visitors to the area will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of specially priced prix fixe menus from some of LA’s best restaurants during this this period and restaurants from El Segundo to Rancho Palos Verdes will be participating in this culinary event. Some of the restaurants will feature lunch, some will offer dinner and some will present both, so be sure to check the website at http://discoverlosangeles.com/restaurantweekv2/. Diners may make a reservation online at Open Table or contact the restaurant directly. Due to the popularity of this event, advance reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are welcome but there is no guarantee they can be accommodated. This is a great opportunity to sample something different and it’s sure to whet your appetite without emptying your wallet!

Jackson’s Food + Drink welcomes award-winning mixologist Joseph Brooke to the South Bay for a One-Night Only affair tonight, July 18th from 6 to 9 p.m. Joe began his career in New York City, manning the bars and dining rooms of high-profile, destination nightspots. After moving to LA, he brought his cocktail acumen to the historic Bar Marmont, Copa d'Oro, and most recently, Mixology101 in Santa Monica. During this event, Joseph Brooke will create specialty cocktails featuring Kappa Pisco. Event attendees will have a chance to sip these one-night only cocktails with the fast-rising star. Manhattan Beach luxury boutique Shade Hotel hosts a monthly Wine Academy on the third Thursday of each month. Ease on down the yellow-brick road July 19 through July 28 with the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit musical, The Wiz, presented by the Education Department of the Norris Center for the Performing Arts. This modern, soul-filled adaptation of Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, captures all the magic of the beloved classic, as Dorothy and Toto are whisked away to the enchanted wonderland of Oz. The spectacular musical numbers are set to the beat of an infectious mixture of 70s rock and Motown melodies. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays, as well a 2 p.m. show on July 27. Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach will partner with Yoga studios throughout the South Bay on Saturday, July 20 to host a Yogathon fundraiser. The event will benefit free Yoga and mnd/body programs for cancer patients and their families. Yoga enthusiasts can take part at their favorite studio or gym and join Yogi's of all levels in dedicating one yoga class to a loved one who has been affected by cancer. Participants are also welcome to fundraise on their own to honor those close to them who have been impacted by cancer. Each participant that collects or donates $100 or more in pledges will receive a gift bag with items provided by Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts, Hot Yoga Center, Core Power Yoga, Lyfe Yoga Center and Equinox, El Segundo. Prizes for top fundraisers will be also be awarded. Participating Yoga studios include: Art Flying Yoga in Torrance, Beach Cities Health District in Redondo Beach, Yoga Loft-Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Yoga and Fitness, Studio Pulse in Redondo Beach, Yogaworks in El Segundo and Feel the Bliss of Yoga & Reiki in Redondo Beach. The American Honda Motor Company, in partnership with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, presents An Evening under the Stars with Kenny G: the 27th Annual Gourmet Food & Wine Festival on Saturday, July 20. The gala event takes place from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Honda Headquarters in Torrance. The proceeds will benefit the Torrance Memorial Medical Center New Patient Tower. The evening features a performance by Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, Kenny G, scrumptious bites of the finest South Bay cuisine and more than 80 varietals of wine. The Western Museum of Flight presents P-51 Mustang Magic on Saturday, July 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. Children five and older are invited to make and take home a model of the famous P-51 Mustang airplane. These Make & Take sessions include free entry to the museum and a photo shoot with a real P-51 Mustang. This event is presented in cooperation with Pacific Coast Hobbies whose staff will be on hand to assist with model building and answer technical questions. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park Series sponsored by Chevron.
