Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for October 3, 2013

Rumor has it we’re going to experience a heat wave this weekend and wouldn’t you know, there are several fabulous outdoor events scheduled over the next few days. Enjoy!

Tonight, Thursday, October 3, is the last night of the Cancer Support Community’s annual Girl’s Night Out Fun-Raiser. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with the opening of the bar and silent auction, followed by dinner, live auction, world class line-up of top comedians, raffle and lots of laughs. Each evening will also include inspirational speakers who will share their stories of cancer survival. Tickets are $95 per person. Proceeds from this event will help fund free cancer support groups at CSC-RB. For additional information and reservations call 310-376-3550. The Manhattan Beach 10K Run takes place Saturday, October 5, starts promptly at 7:30 a.m. and finishes just in time for the opening of the 41st Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair. The course winds its way through the heart of Manhattan Beach with the final stretch taking participants along the ocean front Strand. There are two ways to register: online at http://www.active.com/running/manhattan-beach-ca/36th-annual-manhattan-beach-10k-2013 or in person at the Village Runner store located at 1840 North Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach. The Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is a separate event from the Manhattan Beach 10K Run and does not provide shuttle service for parking on race morning. The 41st Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair takes place October 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  A longstanding South Bay tradition, the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is a fun-filled, family occasion. With over 200 vendors, there’s something for everyone: from ceramics and clothing, oil and water paintings to photographs and sculptures made from glass, wood and metal, the Hometown Fair merchants offer an extensive assortment of quality craftsmanship. Exhibitors are by invitation only so as to provide a unique selection of items. There’s a beer garden, a wine garden, two stages with live entertainment, pony rides, petting zoo and much, much more. The Hometown Fair is located in the general area of Live Oak, Dorsey Field and the Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach. Shuttle service is available from 8 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday from the Northrop/Grumman parking lot. The shuttle service parking is located at the corner of Aviation Boulevard and Marine Avenue in Redondo Beach and will run approximately every 15 minutes throughout each day. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy in partnership with Terranea Resorts and Whole Foods Torrance presents the annual Palos Verdes Pastoral: A Garden-to-Table Dining Experience on Sunday, October 6. Each year the Conservancy will bring guests to special places amidst nature for a moveable feast throughout the preserves – one year on the beach, the next on the cliffs, another deep in green fields and canyons and so on. A special menu created by Chef de Cuisine Rebecca Merhej will showcase the best of California-grown food and wine. The reception begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. at mar’sel restaurant at Terranea Resort. Featuring the best of California handcrafted, organic and sustainable products, some of the finest producers from around the state are coming together to donate all the food and wine for the evening. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce presents Blocktoberfest on Sunday, October 6. The annual arts and crafts fair takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Downtown Torrance on El Prado Street between Cabrillo and Sartori Avenues. The event features live bands, a craft beer garden, arts and crafts, carnival games and family-friendly entertainment. Downtown Torrance offers a variety of restaurants for your dining pleasure: Red Car Brewery, La Capilla, 1321 Downtown Taproom, Tortilla Cantina, Keegan’s Pub, Torrance Bakery, Buffy’s, The Buffalo Fire Department and others will be open for business so be sure to stop in for a bite. The Comedy & Magic Club is hosting a fundraising event to benefit the Redondo Beach Art Group on Wednesday, October 9. The public is invited to enjoy the hilarious show featuring comedian Rod ‘RodMan’ Thompson. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the show beginning at 8 p.m. This evening of comedy is for adults 18 years and older and a state issued ID is required for entry. All proceeds will benefit the Redondo Beach Art Group and its mission to promote the arts, art education and public art in the South Bay. Tickets are $20 per person and must be purchased in advance at the Frame & Art Dept. located at 950 Aviation Boulevard in Hermosa Beach. To contact the Frame & Art Dept., call 310-374-6900. Attendees must call The Comedy & Magic Club and make a reservation for the event by calling in their ticket numbers to 310-372-1193. A ticket without a reservation does not guarantee admission. This is the last weekend to catch The Producers at The Norris Center for the Performing Arts. Based on the classic film of the same name, the irreverent, zany show is one of the most popular musicals in Broadway history, winning a record twelve Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $45 and discounted group sales tickets are available. The show contains mature humor and adult language and is not recommended for children under 12 years.
