Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for September 19, 2013

You thought you had a hard time deciding what to do last weekend? HAH! Wait until you see all the choices for this weekend!

This year, LA Beer Week runs from September 19 through September 29 and since the South Bay has become the epicenter of beer brewing, it’s only natural that there will be all sorts of beer events in the area. This Guide isn’t long enough to list the events, so check out all the details here: http://southbaybyjackie.com/la-beer-week-in-the-south-bay-september-19-29-2013/.

I don’t normally post business functions but this one sounds more like a fun social event. The El Segundo Chamber of Commerce and LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce present EXPO 2013: A Heritage of Business, Tastings & Socializing on Thursday, September 19. Hosted by the Hacienda Hotel, the event takes place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Mix and mingle with business owners, residents, dignitaries and others from El Segundo and the greater South Bay area. Attendees will enjoy delicious appetizers and a no-host bar courtesy of the Hacienda Hotel along with a raffle and Grand Prize Drawing simply for visiting the many exhibitors. But wait, it gets better…Guests will want to stick around for the After Party to enjoy desserts, wine and beer tastings and a coffee bar. After Party participants include some of El Segundo’s finest food purveyors: Il Fornaio, Paul Martin’s American Bistro, Rock & Brews, Second City Bistro, Café del Rey, Battaglini Estate Winery, Bristol Farms, Peet’s Coffee and the El Segundo Catering Company. Entertainment will be provided by musician Dayton Borders and the always popular photo booth is courtesy of JW Photography. For additional information, call the El Segundo Chamber at 310-322-1220 or email at info@elsegundochamber.org. The Hacienda Hotel is located at 525 North Sepulveda Boulevard in El Segundo.

The South Bay pays homage to all things lobster at the 18 Annual Redondo Beach Lobster Festival beginning Friday, September 20 and running through Sunday, September 22. Lobster may reign supreme at this classic South Bay event but there are plenty of other reasons to attend. The music line-up features live bands and DJ’s playing throughout the weekend as well as stand up paddle board lessons, mechanical bull rides, carnival midway games, face painting and balloon art. There are several lobster meal packages available for your dining pleasure. If you’re not in the mood for lobster (gasp!) or wearing a bib doesn’t appeal to your fashion sense, several local restaurants will be serving up alternative mouth-watering dishes. The Festival takes place at the Seaside Lagoon next to King Harbor, just north of the Redondo Beach Pier at 200 Portofino Way in Redondo Beach (at the corner of Harbor Drive and Beryl Street). Free bike parking will be available courtesy of the Beach Cities Cycling Club and Hermosa Cyclery. For more information, visit the website at http://www.lobsterfestival.com/.

The Norris Center for the Performing Arts presents Mel Brooks’ outrageously funny, smash hit musical, The Producers running from September 20 through October 6. Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $45 and discounted group sales tickets are available. The show contains mature humor and adult language and is not recommended for children under 12 years. Free parking is available adjacent to the theatre and the facility is wheelchair accessible.

The RAT Beach Bike Tour presents the Fourth Annual Charity Rat Ride on Saturday, September 21. This is a bike tour, not a bike race. It’s strictly for fun and it’s a rare opportunity to explore the South Bay from a two wheeled perspective. The start and finish line is located at the Seaside Lagoon because the RAT Beach Bike Tour is partnering with The Redondo Beach Lobster Festival. All riders will be admitted to the Lobster Festival for lunch and a huge party at the end of the ride. The event features non-stop music, mechanical bull riding, paddleboard lessons, kids area, cocktails, food, sun, sand and surf! There are three different rides for all levels – the Metric Century (62 miles), the Metric Half Century (31 miles) and the Metric Quarter Century (15.5 miles). This year’s event promises to be larger than ever with more diverse routes through the South Bay. All three rides take advantage of the splendid coastal location incorporating the bike paths along the Strand and Esplanade. Entry fees go to several charities supported by the South Bay Rotary Club including the Scott Newman Center and the Pediatric Therapy Network. The entry fee includes a t-shirt, hat, refreshments, roving bike support, lunch and entry to the Lobster Festival. The event will proceed rain or shine and helmets are required. For more information, visit the website at www.ratbeachbiketour.com.

Palos Verdes Art Center presents Lunch with Lilly and Trunk Show on Saturday, September 21 beginning at noon. American designer, Lilly Pulitzer, passed in April but her iconic designs live on! Up and down the coast, thousands of volunteers gather to remove trash and debris that eventually ends up in the ocean. California Coastal Cleanup Day was first organized in 1985 by the California Coastal Commission. Last year, over 65,000 volunteers removed almost 770,000 pounds of trash from beaches, rivers and lakes throughout the state. Heal the Bay will be organizing the South Bay effort and there are cleanup sites from El Segundo to Rolling Hills. The cleanup takes place between 9:00 am and noon. To learn more and sign up as a volunteer, visit the website at http://www.healthebay.org/.

You can listen to the show live or at your leisure here: http://southbaybyjackie.com/september-19-2013-pete-moffat-redondo-beach-lobsterfest/. It’s all lobster, all the time!
